What's the difference between Yellow and the Red/Blue Versions? There are a number of differences between the 3 versions. Here are the main ones: 1. Storyline follows more to the TV show (i.e. Jessie and James, Gary gets an Eevee, you start out with Pikachu, etc.) 2. Pokedex pictures have been redone (and look much better). 3. It is GBC enhanced. So playing it on Game Boy Color will get you good color. The Japanese version of Yellow was not designed for the GBC, but the American version is. 4. Most Pokemon that were only found in Red or Blue are in Yellow. 5. Pikachu will follow you around. "Talking" to him will let you check his current condition. 6. Locations of certain Pokemon have been changed. 7. Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle can all be found in one game. You get them from certain Trainers, not in the wild. 8. The Unknown Dungeon has been redone. In other words, when you enter the dungeon it will look different than it was on the Red/Blue versions. How do I capture Pokemon? First off, you need to purchase some Poke Balls at a Poke Mart. Each kind of ball can perform better or worse than others. Then visit a cave or an area with grass. There are some another places, but you see those the most. Walk around until you go into battle. Have your Pokemon fight the enemy until the enemy's energy level is very low. Use your Poke Ball, and you should be able to capture one. If not, keep trying! And remember you cannot capture a trainer's Pokemon! I captured one, now what do I do? Now you can train your Pokemon to fight! Remember, to heal your Pokemon, just visit a Pokemon Center. Also once you capture one, data is recorded in your PokeDex. With that, you can find some info and where you can find it. I won't go into much more detail because other parts of this section explain them. How do my Pokemon learn moves? You can get them in one of two ways. Once Pokemon reach a certain level they learn a move. Another way is to use a TM or HM on it. Moves use Power Points (PP). So when you don't have any PP, the Pokemon can't use the move until healed. Remember that your Pokemon can only have four moves at a time! What do these "types" mean? Every Pokemon has one or two types out of fifteen. They tell how your Pokemon will perform against other types. Look in your manual to find the Battle Chart. For example, a Grass-type does great against a Water-type, but it does poor against a Fire-type. How do I build levels? If you played an RPG before, you should understand know how it works. First, find an area like I said about before for capturing, or you can fight trainers. Go into battle, and if your Pokemon wins, it gains EXP. Once it gets a certain amount of EXP, it goes up a level. With a level-up, its stats increases. To see how much is needed, check its stats. If you switch Pokemon in battle, they both get EXP, but the amount is reduced. That can also help when you want to build your low-level Pokemon. What are the Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) for? These items can teach your Pokemon new moves for battle, but they work a bit differently. TMs can only be used once and only work in battle. HMs can be used over and over, and the moves work on the Field Map and battle. Most moves can only work with certain Pokemon, such as "Fly" only works with Flying-type. How do my Pokemon evolve? Some Pokemon may evolve a couple times or some may not evolve at all! When they evolve, the Pokemon's stats increase more than a level-up would. Pokemon can in one of three ways: #1: Level-Up This one is used more than the others. The Pokemon changes once it reaches a certain level. For example, Kakuna evolves into Beedrill at around Level 10. #2: Item Some Pokemon only evolve if you use a certain Stone. Most Stones can be bought at Celadon City. For example, Staryu evolves into Starmie if you use a Water Stone on it. #3: Trade These Pokemon only evolve if you trade with a friend who has another Game Pak. This applies to four Pokemon: Machoke, Kadabra, Haunter, and Graveler. How do I earn money? There are a couple of ways to do this. You can fight a trainer and win or use the "Pay Day" attack. You can get Pay Day from Meowth or from a TM on Route 12. Also fighting the Elite Four will get you a lot of cash. ======================================================================= 3) IMPORTANT INFORMATION ======================================================================= This section contains various information on the game. --------------- Hidden Machines --------------- HM 01 - Cut: In order for you to get the HM 01, you must first get the S.S. Ticket. Go to Route 24 and 25 and visit Bill the Pokemanic. Bill had a bizarre accident with a new experimental machine. Talk to him, and he goes into the machine. Use the PC, and Bill will be changed back to normal. He will give you the ticket as a reward. Visit Vermilion City and board the S.S. Anne. Work your way around the ship until you fight Gary. Beat Gary and go down the stairs to enter the captain's room. Talk to him and "rub" his back to get the HM. The Cut ability allows you to cut down trees to access other areas. HM 02 - Fly: This one is not that hard to get. Go to Route 16 west of Celadon City. Cut down the tree and follow the road into a building. Keep going west and enter the house. The person inside will give you the HM. The Fly ability allows you to visit cities you've been to. HM 03 - Surf: This one is located in the Secret House in Safari Zone. I can't really explain this well, so just try to make your way around. Once you reach the house, the man inside gives you the HM as a prize. The Surf ability allows you to move around on water. HM 04 - Strength: The Warden in Fuchsia City will give you the HM if you give him his Gold Teeth. The teeth are located in Safari Zone. It's in Area 3 near the Secret House. Get them and give them to the Warden. Now that he can talk, he'll hand over the Hidden Machine. The Strength ability allows you to move heavy boulders. HM 05 - Flash: Enter Diglett's Cave east of Vermilion City. Go through to get near Viridian Forest. The one house in that section is where one of Prof. Oak's aides is. If you caught 10 or more kinds of Pokemon, he gives you HM 05. ------------------ Technical Machines ------------------ TM 01 - Mega Punch: Mt. Here's a rundown of how Safari Zone works. When you pay, you can 30 Safari Balls and Bait. 30 Balls may seem a lot, but you'll end up using most of them. You have four areas to explore, each may have a Pokemon that is not in the other. You also have a timer, but it only decreases when you walk. When you run out of time or Balls, the game is over. The battle system in this mini-game works different than a regular battle. Instead of having Pokemon fight, you fight...sort of. In other words, you can't cause ANY damage to the enemy, that's why they give you 30 Balls! You have four commands in battle: Ball x(Amount of Balls) - Throws a Safari Ball. You usually have to throw multiple times to capture a Pokemon. Bait - Throw some Bait. This makes it slightly easier to capture. Throw Rock - Throw a nearby rock. Makes it slightly easier to capture, but the Pokemon tends to run away after you use this. Run - Self-explanatory. Here's a trick you can do to fight Pokemon in the Safari Zone outside of it. Enter the Safari Zone, exit and go to the eastern side of Seafoam Islands. Move up and down along the "shore" part to fight Pokemon from the Safari Zone! This makes it easier to capture them. The bad part is that there are some Pokemon that you won't find. ======================================================================= 4) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ======================================================================= This section answers some of the common questions about Pokemon Yellow. ----------- Yellow-Only ----------- Q: How do you get Surfing Pikachu? A: You can use the same old solution, GameShark. Or you can get it by completing certain critera in Pokemon Stadium. Q: Is Togepi in the game? A: No. Q: Is Mew in the game? A: Yes, but you can only get it with a GameShark. Q: Does Yellow have voice effects like Pokemon Pinball? A: Yes it does. All of the ones I've heard so far are just from Pikachu though. Q: Does Pokemon Yellow with Game Boy Color? A: Yes, Yellow is GBC enhanced. To give you a general idea, the color is very similar to how Red/Blue looks on Super Game Boy. Q: Does the Item Duplication trick still work in Yellow? A: No, MissingNo. was removed from the game. Q: What Pokemon cannot be found in the game? A: Here's a list of Pokemon that you can't find anywhere in the game. #013 - Weedle #014 - Kakuna #015 - Beedrill #023 - Ekans #024 - Arbok #026 - Raichu #052 - Meowth #053 - Persian #109 - Koffing #110 - Weezing #124 - Jynx #125 - Electabuzz #126 - Magmar ----- Items ----- Q: Where is the Old Amber fossil? A: You need the Cut ability for this. Go to Pewter City, and cut down the tree near the museum. Go through the door to a room in the Pokemon museum, and the fossil is in that room. Q: What is the use of a PP Up? A: It's purpose is to increase the PP of an ability of a Pokemon. You can use a maximum of three PP Ups per ability. But the PP increased will vary so here's how it works. The ability that has a low max PP will not increase very much, but an ability with a high max PP will. For example, if you use 3 PP Up on Tackle, its max will become 56 from 35. If you use it on Hyper Beam, its max will become 8 from 5. Q: How many Masterballs are in the game? A: Only one, so use it on a one-time Pokemon like Mewtwo. Q: How do I reach the Card Key in Silph. Co? A: Here's how... 1. Go to the guard in the lower-left corner on the 5th Floor. 2. Step on the Warp Tile beside him. 3. When you reappear, step on it again. 4. Now you should be standing ontop of the tile by the guard. Take 1 step down, and you can reach the Card Key. Q: Is it possible to buy a Bicycle without a Bike Voucher? A: No. The maximum amount of money you can have is $999,999. ----------------- Pokemon Locations ----------------- Q: What does "Area Unknown" in the Pokedex mean? A: It means that that Pokemon can only be evolved from another Pokemon or it can mean you have to fish for it. Q: If I defeat the rare Pokemon (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Snorlax, Mewtwo) is there any other way to get them? A: No, so once you defeat one, it's gone for good! ---------- Badges/HMs ---------- Q: Why does my Pokemon not obey me? A: You must get the Badge that allows you to command a higher level Pokemon! Q: I've defeated [Insert Gym Leader here], and they say I can use [Insert HM Ability here]. How do I use it? A: The Badge you get from winning only allows you to use the ability once you have found the HM! For example, Lt. Surge says that you can use "Fly," but you must first get HM 02 west of Celadon City. Then teach it to a Pokemon. Q: I have the HM, but the ability won't work! A: You must earn the Badge that allows you to use it! --------- Evolution --------- Q: How do I stop my Pokemon from evolving? A: Once it starts to evolve, simply press B to cancel the process. Once the Pokemon gains another Level, it'll try to evolve again. Q: It says to trade this certain Pokemon. Where do I trade it? A: This only applies to Graveler, Kadabra, Machoke, and Haunter. You trade those Pokemon to another Pokemon cartridge. As before, when you start a new game, Prof. Oak will give you an intro to the game. Then pick your name and your Rival's name. I'll put Gary as the Rival. ----------- Pallet Town ----------- Pokemon: #025 - Pikachu Items: Potion When the game first begins, turn on the PC in your room and withdraw the Potion. Exit the house and try to exit Pallet Town. Prof. Oak stops you and a battle will begin. Oak uses a Poke Ball and captures the wild Pikachu. Then he takes you back to his lab. The Prof. let's you take the Poke Ball containing Eevee, but Gary just shoves you out of the way. He takes and you get the Pikachu. Now try to leave the lab, and Gary challenges you. I find this battle much easier than the one in Red/Blue. If you win, you get some money, and your Pikachu gains a level. Pikachu comes out of his Poke Ball, and Oak will comment that it dislikes being in the Ball. Try "talking" to Pikachu to check his condition. Now you can go north to Route 1. ------- Route 1 ------- Pokemon: #016 - Pidgey #019 - Rattata Items: Potion You can only train your Pikachu here. Talk to the first guy you see to get a free Potion. Keep going up to reach Viridian City. ------------- Viridian City ------------- Pokemon: None Items: Oak's Parcel Enter the Poke Mart, and clerk will hand you a package that you have to deliver to Prof. Oak. So head back to Pallet... ----------- Pallet Town ----------- Pokemon: None Items: Pokedex Town Map Go into the lab and give him the package. Then he will give Gary and you a Pokedex. Even though Gary says his sister won't give you a Town Map, go into his house. Talk to his sister to get the map. Now go back up to Viridian City. ------------- Viridian City ------------- Pokemon: None Items: None Now you can buy items at the Poke Mart, so get about 5 Poke Balls. Go to Route 1 and capture a Pidgey and Rattata. You can go west of Viridian City to Route 22, but it's optional. -------- Route 22 -------- Pokemon: #021 - Spearow #029 - Nidoran (F) #032 - Nidoran (M) #056 - Mankey Items: None Yes, you can find a Mankey this early in the game. Capture the 4 new Pokemon here. You have probably ran out of Poke Balls by now, so go back and get 5 more. Then that should be all you need for now. If you try to go west, Gary will pop up and challenge you to another fight. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINER: Gary REWARDS: $280 POKEMON: L9 Spearow & L8 Eevee Spearow is a piece of cake with Pikachu. Two Thundershocks should take him down. Eevee might be a problem, so use Thunderwave if your Pikachu has it. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Now go to Viridian and go north to Route 2. ------- Route 2 ------- Pokemon: #016 - Pidgey #019 - Rattata #029 - Nidoran (F) #032 - Nidoran (M) Items: None Nothing to do here. Go up to Viridian Forest. --------------- Viridian Forest --------------- Pokemon: #010 - Caterpie #011 - Metapod #016 - Pidgey #017 - Pidgeotto Items: Poke Ball Potion (x2) And you can also find a Pidgeotto very early in the game. I haven't seen any Weedles/Kakunas here so I can assume they're not in Yellow. Anyway, capture a Caterpie, collect the items, and defeat the Trainers. I would recommend that you try to raise your team of Pokemon to about L10. It's a good idea to have low-level Pokemon fight wild Metapods because they can't harm you (all they know is Harden). Once you get through this forest, you will end up at Pewter City. ----------- Pewter City ----------- Pokemon: None Items: None The main objective is to go to the Gym and beat Brock. I would recommend getting a Butterfree and train it so it learns Confusion. You can also use Mankey. So head to the Gym and talk to the Leader. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINER: Brock PRIZES: $1188, Boulder Badge, & TM 34 POKEMON: L10 Geodude & L12 Onix If Pikachu doesn't have Quick Attack, don't bother using him for this fight. Use Butterfree's Confusion, and you won't have much of a problem winning. Another strategy is to capture Mankey and raise him to L10. Then use the Low Kick ability. Either way, it'll be an easy match. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ------- Route 3 ------- Pokemon: #019 - Rattata #021 - Spearow #027 - Sandshrew #056 - Mankey #129 - Magikarp Items: None This is obviously a good place to train because there are a lot of Trainers here. Once you get through all of them, you'll find the grass area. Just capture a Sandshrew. If you check out the Pokemon Center, one of the people there will be selling a Magikarp. I wouldn't recommend getting one now because you can easily another one later. Then continue on to find the entrance to Mt. Moon. -------- Mt. Moon -------- Pokemon: #027 - Sandshrew #035 - Clefairy #041 - Zubat #046 - Paras #074 - Geodude Items: Potion (x2) TM 01 TM 12 Rare Candy Escape Rope HP Up Moon Stone (x2) Ether You have a bunch of new Pokemon to catch here. You'll find Geodude and Zubat often, but it will take a while before you encounter a Clefairy or Paras. If you just want to get through this place, go down the ladder in the upper-left corner of the floor. Keep going until you reach the Fossils. There you have to fight a Super Nerd. He has a L12 Grimer, L12 Voltorb, and a L12 Koffing. Use Butterfree and Geodude, and you shouldn't have a problem. Once you defeat him, you choose either a Helix Fossil or a Dome Fossil. It doesn't really matter now which one you pick. Attempt to continue on, and you'll have your first fight with Jessie and James... <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINER: Jessie & James REWARDS: $420 POKEMON: L14 Ekans, L14 Meowth, & L14 Koffing As you can tell, they use their "trademark" Pokemon. For Ekans, hit with Butterfree's Confusion. Since Meowth's attacks are Normal-type, use Geodude so that they do little damage. And again, use Butterfree against Koffing. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Now continue on to exit Mt. Moon. ------- Route 4 ------- Pokemon: #019 - Rattata #021 - Spearow #027 - Sandshrew #056 - Mankey Items: TM 04 Nothing much to do here. Just grab TM 04 and go east to Cerulean. ------------- Cerulean City ------------- Pokemon: #001 - Bulbasaur Items: None If you enter the building to the left of the Pokemon Center, there will be a woman inside with some other Pokemon. Talk to her, and say yes to get the Bulbasaur. I think your Pikachu must be happy for that to work, but I'm not sure. You can go directly to the Gym and fight Misty or you can fight the Trainers north of here for some EXP. If your Pikachu isn't at least L18, trainer him. Remember not to get its Level over 20 or it won't obey you! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINER: Misty REWARDS: $2079, Cascade Badge, & TM 11 POKEMON: L18 Staryu & L21 Starmie Because Pikachu has a low Defense, you should be bring a couple of Potions if needed. Keep using Thundershock until they go down. Starmie's Bubblebeam can easily take out Pikachu, so make sure you bring out Pokemon at least L15. Butterfree is good for this fight because of its Sleep Powder attack. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The next place to head is north to Route 24 & 25... ------------- Route 24 & 25 ------------- Pokemon: #004 - Charmander #016 - Pidgey #043 - Oddish #048 - Venonat #069 - Bellsprout Items: Nugget TM 45 When you try to go north, Gary will walk up to you. Make sure your Pokemon are at L15 or higher before you head up. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINER: Gary REWARDS: $595 POKEMON: L18 Spearow, L15 Sandshrew, L15 Rattata, & L17 Eevee Use Pikachu's Thundershock for Spearow. Geodude works well for the other because their attacks are Normal-type. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gary mentions about Bill and his storage system. So you're next stop is Bill's House. But before you can reach him, you have to fight the Trainers on "Nugget Bridge". Here's what they use: Trainer #1 - L14 Caterpie & L14 Weedle Trainer #2 - L14 Pidgey & L14 Nidoran (F) Trainer #3 - L14 Rattata, L14 Ekans, & L14 Zubat Trainer #4 - L16 Pidgey & L16 Nidoran (F) Trainer #5 - L18 Mankey Rocket - L15 Ekans & L15 Zubat Once you beat the 5 Trainers, you get a Nugget. But then you have to fight a the Team Rocket member. Use Confusion to beat him. Yes, you can get Charmander here. One of the characters says he should release his Charmander. When he says if you'll take care of him, say yes, and you'll get it. Catch a Venonat, Bellsprout and Oddish and go east. There you'll find a bunch of Trainers. You have to fight some of them in order to continue on. Go keeping until you find a house. --------------------------------- Sea Cottage (a.k.a. Bill's House) --------------------------------- Pokemon: None Items: S.S. Ticket When you first enter, Pikachu runs up to a Pokemon with has a "?" balloon above his head. Talk to the Pokemon to find out it's actually Bill. After he enters the machine, use the PC to get him back to normal (Pikachu makes a nice face after you do that). He'll give you the S.S. Ticket as a reward. Exit the house and re-enter it. This time, turn on the PC. You can get a Pokedex picture of Eevee, Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. ------------- Cerulean City ------------- Pokemon: None Items: TM 28 Once you get back here, you can now enter the house where a TM was stolen. Exit the house through the hole to the north. Outside will be a TR member. Defeat him to recover TM 28, Dig. Now head south to Route 5. ------- Route 5 ------- Pokemon: #016 - Pidgey #019 - Rattata #039 - Jigglypuff #063 - Abra Items: If you want to fight Pokemon in this area, go down the path with the fence things. The main creature to capture is Abra since he will be your first Psychic Pokemon. At the end of the Route is the Pokemon Daycare Center. Go past that to find 2 buildings. Enter the small building with a sign in front of it. ---------------- Underground Path ---------------- Pokemon: None Items: Full Restore Nothing much about here. Near the staircase you go down is a hidden Full Restore. Just press A a bit, and you should eventually get it. Continue south to Route 6. ------- Route 6 ------- Pokemon: #016 - Pidgey #019 - Rattata #039 - Jigglypuff #063 - Abra Items: None There are a couple of Trainers here if you need to build some levels. When you're ready, go south. -------------- Vermilion City -------------- Pokemon: #007 - Squirtle Items: Bike Voucher Old Rod Near the Poke Mart is a woman who caught a Squirtle that was roaming around. She says it needs a good trainer to set it straight. You can only get this Squirtle once you defeat Lt. Surge, so don't worry about it now. To get the Bike Voucher, enter the building right above the Gym. In this building is the Pokemon Fan Club. Go inside and talk to the club's president. Listen to his story about Rapidash, and he'll give you the voucher. Now head back to Cerulean City's Bike Shop to get the bike. In the building to the left of the Pokemon Center is the Fishing Guru. Talk to him and say you like to fish. He'll then give you the Old Rod. Once you're done looking around, head south to the S.S.
