Guide/FAQ to Crystalis on GBC Version .1 written by `Xenocide Version History v.1 Initial Public release ================== Table of Contents ================== Introduction Story Controls Characters Items The Swords Magic Legal ============= Introduction ============= In 1990, SNK (the same guys who make the Neo Geo Pocket Color which now just lost to the Gameboy) developed an interesting action RPG for the NES, borrowing elements from Zelda and Final Fantasy. Set in a post-apocolyptic world, you play a hero from a previous war, struck with amnesia. Thanks to my new favorite developer, Crystalis is now being ported to the Gameboy Color, a full ten years after the original was published. The port will feature added cutscenes, improved sprites and backgrounds, NPC voice dialogs, and the addition of storyline, ending and maps that were not included in the original due to time constraints. However, there are things that were dropped from the original, like the HP bar, instead is the less graphic standard HP fraction and the warping without casting teleport ... feature... And they also redid the music, much to many people's dissapointment. The game plays like secret of mana, with HPs and MPs in a zelda like manner. The designers have taken the "full energy sword shot" element from zelda and greatly expanded it. Your swords initially have a single level, but when you find bracelets or orbs, you can charge your sword up for huge damage, up to level three. Another element of the game is the elemental swords. You start off with the wind sword, and you will find three other swords: water, fire, and thunder. Enemies have weakness and strenths that you'll need to consider when arming yourself. If you like Crystalis, I would think you would also enjoy the Zelda games, the Secret of Mana games, the Soul Blazer trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma) Rolan's Curse, and Landstalker, among others. ====== Story ====== Taken from the cinematic introduction in the NES version: October 1997, October 1, The END DAY Savage War engulfs the world. ... Civilization is destroyed... An evolution had taken place. The earth's axis shifted and all the creatures became mutated Life would never be the same... Those that survived vowed not to repeat their mistakes of the past and erected a great tower in the sky... To oppress evil forever... Taken from the cinematic intro to the GBC version(obviously more effort was put into this one): Throughout history it has to be to known that an end is merely a beginning in disguise. When was overtook the entire planet, some thought the true end had come. However, some saw this end as a beginning when they realized a group of humans had acquired magical abilities once considered legendary. Tamalic was one of these few. He and his fellow magicians had not only survived the war, but gained new magical powers that allowed them to bring life back to the scorched planet. Not all the magicians that entered this new dawn of magic spent their energies on restoring life to the world. One called Dragonia, chose to combine his magical abilites with the shunned ways of technology. This combination of magic and technology allowed Dragionia to grow in power, and force his evil will upon the rest of humanity. Four brave magicians; Zebu, Tornel, Asnia and Kensu, were determinded to stop Dragonia. They forged four swords from the basic elements of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder. Joining these swords would create the Sword of crystalis, the mightiest sword ever created. Before the swords could be combined, Dragionia seized them and hurled the swords throughout the land. The four thought all hope was lost. They were yet to learn the prophecy of the two sleeping warrior-magicians. This prophecy told of two sleeping warrior-magicians who would only awaken to oppose the powers of technology once all magical hopehad been lost. You are one of these warrior-magicians and your quest is to find and join the four swords to stop Dragonia's reign of terror. ========= Controls ========= D-pad - Move the hero in 8 directions, talk To people A Button - Use magic, Use items like rabbit boots B Button - Attack with sword.
