Just keep all this info in mind and scroll down to the Basic Battling Section. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Part VI: Advance Battling =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This long section is for teaching you all about Advanced Strategies to battle with. We'll go in-depth on the options you learned (Fight, Pokemon, Quit). We'll start off with Fight, there are three kind of attacks. Here they are. Offensive Moves This is the kind of attack that deals damage. There are two kinds of attacks. Special and Physical. Special attacks will deal more damage if the user's SPCL. ATK is high. There are a couple of types that has a high SPCL. ATK rating. We'll get into Special and Physical attacks later in the FAQ. You should also keep in mind that if your Pokemon's attacks are full of offensive moves, you will more than often lose battles with this paticular Pokemon. It's a good idea to have a mixed aray of moves. Here's Pokemon Stadium 1's Mewtwo. ------------------------ Pokemon Stadium's Mewtwo ------------------------ Psychic Thunderbolt Blizzard Rest This is a very carefully trained Mewtwo and is very effective in battle. Mewtwo's stats are already unmatched, and giving it Rest just about makes it almost invincible. It also have moves that compliment each other, but we'll have to get into all that later. Defensive Moves These are the kind of moves that annoy people the most, they also deal no damage -- to the HP that is. These attacks focus on raising your defences to make you take less damage against physical attacks, speeding up your Pokemon to get double attacks, raising your Attack power to make Physical Moves hurt more, raising your SPCL ATK to make Special Attacks deal more damage, or lowering the oponent's accuracy so you get hit less often. Items Items such as Berries of any kind or is made to bulk up your Pokemon -- but don't misunderstand the matter. Allow me to explain, making your Pokemon holding an Iron won't make your Pokemon have higher Defence in battle, instead this will be a waste of Item-giving, if you're not going to raise your Pokemon's Abilities, why make it hold the item? There are also items that only work on paticular Pokemon. For example, there is an item called 'Light Ball' and this will raise a Pikachu's SPCL. ATK, but if you try to give it to any other Pokemon -- including Raichu, it won't work! Here's a table, of Items that make your attacks Stronger, make you have more accuracy and other things too! *NOTE* You Get these Items in Gold and Silver! Wrong! Most likely the opponent will switch out, so it's better to use a physical attack. But if you really want to be tricky, use a Rock attack the opponent will think that it'll have a clear advantage, when BOOM! The Trainer's Flying Type will be aboslutley SLAUGHTERED...I love that word :) Crippling attacks These are the attacks that stop your opponent from moving in many ways. You could Paralyze, Confuse, Freeze, or Flinch your opponent, here's the list of moves that does that. ------------------ Paralyzing attacks ------------------ Thunder Wave Thunderbolt Thunder Zap Cannon Stun Spore Thunderpunch Dragon Breath ----------------- Confusing attacks ----------------- Confuse Ray Swagger Dynamic Punch Supersonic Psybeam ---------------- Freezing attacks ---------------- Ice Punch Blizzard Ice Beam ----------------- Flinching attacks ----------------- Super Fang Rock Slide Hyper Fang Fly (more to come) Now that you learned all this info, it's time to start building your Pokemon =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Part VIII: Building a Pokemon Team =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It's time to get your Pokemon Team started, having what you learned so far, a team has to have Offensive/Denfensive abilities, and a good mix of Crippling attacks is always good, too. To start off, here's a good basic Pokemon with a nice combination of crippling/offensive/denfensive moves. ---------------- #200 Misdreavous --------------- Type: Ghost Toxic Shadow Ball Confuse Ray Mean Look Why is this effective? Well it's not that effective, but it's a nice Misdreavous for you to use. It has a good Combo, Mean Look and Toxic, we'll go in-depth about Move Combos later on. Why is it a good combo? First off, the Trainer should use Mean Look to prevent the Pokemon from switching out. And after that, attack with Toxic. So the Poison has time to work on the opponent. And you should also keep in mind that Toxic hurts more with every turn. So the longer the battle goes on the better for Misdreavous. With this in mind what should you do now? Start thinking of who you want in your team! And find combos that work good for your Pokemon, we'll get into all the Combo and stuff related to that in Prefecting your Pokemon Team. But meanwhile start thinking about your combos! I can't tell you everything, but I'll try to tell you the most I could. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Part IX: Perfecting your Pokemon Team =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Now that you got started on the Team building, it's time to make your Team more effective than it is at the time. Here you will learn about Move Combos and things like that. Before we begin, you should start looking at your team for the last time and see could you figure out what's wrong with it. Here's some questions you could ask yourself: Do I have too much of the same type? Are too many of my Pokemon weak to one paticular type? Are any of my Pokemon's moves flooded with the same type? It's now time to get prefect your Pokemon Team... Here's the first thing to learn... Move Combos These are moves that help each other out. To start off, the key here is to make your attack Stronger or just to make your attack land more often. A Zap Cannon is almost guranteed never to hit. But if you give it to Magneton, who eventually learns Lock-On, will make the next attack hit with a 100 percent guarantee. So if I was handling this, I would start off with a Lock-On, and then hit with a Zap Cannon, with Zap Cannon landing without a shadow of a doubt, I could breath with no worry. The power is also just incredible! There are also a few other combos, I'll get into most of them. But this time I'll explain another attack just like Lock-On, and that's Mind Reader. This could be learned by Fighting types. And it's very effective if you give it to Poliwrath, here's why, just take a look at my Poliwrath and you'll understand. -------------- #62 Poliwrath -------------- Type: Water/Fighting Fissure Dynamic Punch Mind Reader Hydro Pump If you still didn't understand, here's why it quickly became a fatal Pokemon. My Poliwrath has 3 moves that will almost never hit, but as I mentioned before, Mind Reader and Lock-On make your next move hit with no doubt. And if I use the deadly Mind Reader/Fissure combo, it could wipe out 5/6 Pokemon on your team. And that is something to watch out for. Even though this Poliwrath seems invicible, it really isn't. Here's why, Poliwrath doesn't really have a spectacular Speed rating, but Electric types do. And after Electric types hit me with Thunder/Thunderbolt/Thunderpunch, and maybe with a shade of luck I'll some HP left, but once I use Mind Reader, it will be too late, I would be elimanated before I get a chance to attack with any of those powerful moves. And there's also a way to counter that, if I gave my Poliwrath Focus Band, it might have a slight chance of serviving the next blow. And I could attack, but again there is probably a counter for that, and that's using Quick Claw, it just goes on and on. Power-up moves I'll now start to talk to you about powering up your attacks. Or make them more accurate. Let's recap what we learned. -there are moves out there that could make a move hit every time -we should give items to our Pokemon to make them stronger -there are many ways of countering combos I am now going to explore more combos of powering up your moves, or just make the moves hit more often, there are also moves that could make your Pokemon's attack hit without charging up. With this in mind, let's begin. For inaccurate attacks like Thunder, did you know that it attack without missing, and without Mind Reader and Lock-On? Well there is a way to do that. First of all, it requires Rain Dance, and you could get that in the Union Cave. (read one of the FAQs for Gold and Silver.) But you're thinking, but I have an Electric type, how could I teach him/her a Water-type TM? Well you should know this little interesting fact, 3/4 of all Pokemon could learn Rain Dance. Of course except Fire Types. Anyways, teach Rain Dance to your Thunder using Pokemon. And use Rain Dance, after that strike w/ Thunder, and BOOM! It won't miss!!! Rain Dance also raises Water type attacks by half, decreases Fire type atttacks by 50 percent, and makes Thunder hit without a shadow of a doubt. Plus when using Rain Dance, Syenthises and Moonlight would heal half the HP it would normally heal. After talking about Rain Dance, it's time to talk about the exact opposite of Rain Dance, Sunny Day. This attack will raise Fire type attacks by 50 percent, decrease Water type attacks by 50 percent, and make Thunder 50 percent less accurate, in other words, bring down Thunder's accuracy to 20 percent(even lower than Horn Drill!!!). This attack could be also be used to attack with Solarbeam without charging up. And it could do one more thing, once you heal yourself with Scenthysis, it will Heal ALL your HP!!! SPCL ATK, and SPCL DEF -- WATCH OUT!!! Why watch out? Well if your not careful, you could use Thunder on a Water type and only do 1/3 of damage on the HP of that paticular Water type. Why? Well that's when SPCL ATK and SPCL DEF kicks in. For example, you taught Thunder to Snorlax, who has a SPCL ATK rating that is not to impressive. And Snorlax is fighting umm..Mantine, who does have a high SPCL DEF rating. And, I did try this myself, I used Snorlax and Thunder, then it hardly did any damage! Here's why... -Snorlax has one of the most depressing SPCL ATK ratings of all -on the other hand, Mantine has a relitivly high SPCL DEF rating, so it could resist most Special attacks So if you're going to teach your Pokemon Special attacks watch out! Just because some attacks look powerful, it might not really be for your Pokemon! Be Diverse! Diversity is very important if you want to be successful in the Pokemon World. The battle wouldn't be very fun, if you knew exactly what your opponent was going to do! And you would have a better chance of winning if you have a mix of alot of moves from different types. Here's an example of a not very diverse Charizard. ---------- Charizard --------- Flamethrower Fire Punch Fire Blast Fire Spin What's wrong with that Charizard? It's crippled with the same type of attacks over and over again. What would happen if you fought a Water type? Charizard would be pounded into the ground. You're saying: "Oh, it wouldn't make much of a difference" well it would if you had a couple of attacks that could inflict some damage on a Water type. Like this Charizard: --------- Charizard --------- Fire Blast Sunny Day Fly Body Slam Charizard is faster than most of the Water types, and if you manage to get a couple Body Slams or Ariel attacks in, your death wouldn't just be a complete blow-out(or abosulutley SLAUGHTERED). Even better, you should lead with Sunny Day, there's a 75 to 25 chance that you would survive the next Water attack. But not TOO Diverse! It's important to be diverse but, you have to know your Pokemon's limits. On previous sections of this FAQ, you learned that Special Attack and Special Defence is important. If you didn't read that part, you probably should. Yes, using moves that is the same as your type does increase it's power. To learn how to caculate damage, read the next part. But there's limits to that too. Allow me to explain... -if you become to greedy of more damage, and give your Pokemon all the same types of attacks, you'll more than most likely by defeated It's important to have at least one move that is the same type as your Pokemon, so at times when you need to deal more damage than usaul, it's there for you. How to Caculate Damage It's actually pretty simple, since you are reading this FAQ on your computer, it would be so kind of you to Open your Computer's Caculater. (Start, Program, A-M, Accessories, Caculater). But before you do anything, you got to learn how it's done. Please refer to your Instrution Booklet's Pokemon Type Chart. First off all, look at your chart, a plus or a circle sign means that the Attack's Base Power will be doubled or X 2. And a minus or triangle means that the attack power will halved or X 0.5. The equal or X sign means that the attack will have no effect, no damage at all. If the Pokemon using an attack that is the same type as itself, the attack will be mutiplied by 1.5 and if there is a Critical Hit, it'll be doubled or once again mutiplied by 2. If Sunny Day used, the base attack power will mutiply Fire attacks by 1.5, and halves Water attacks. And Rain Dance does the exact opposite, Water attacks get mutiplied by 1.5 and Fire attacks will be halved. You should also keep in mind that the Pokemon's Base Power alsp comes into play. Powerful attacks like Mega Horn and Hyper Beam can be VERY powerful used at the right circumstances, but they are already very heavy hitters. To find out how much an attack hurt, you could use Pokemon Stadium 2's Lab, for reference. Now that you learned all that, it's time to try a couple of examples, if you didn't understand, you should read the info again. Here's an example. (Please do this on your caculater, or pen and paper) Golem is a Rock/Ground type, and he's facing off against a Kingdra. What happens when Kingdra uses Rain Dance, then Surf, and to top that, gets a Critical Hit? Well here's the the math equation of all that. 95(base attack power) X 1.5(attack type and Pokemon type match) X 1.5(Rain Dance) X 2(Water vs. Rock) X 2(Water vs. Ground) X 2(Critical Hit) = 1710 points of damage! This would probably -- most likely, kill in ONE hit. Here's another equation, but differently, just to teach you another kind. It's Gyrados taking on Houndoom, and Houndoom uses Fire Blast on Gyrados, with Rain Dance and scores a Critical Hit. Here's the equation. 120(base attack power) X 1.5(attack type and Pokemon type match) X 0.5(Rain Dance, halves Fire attacks) X 0.5(Fire vs. Water) X 2(Critical Hit) = 89 you see, from 120 base attack power, to 89! All attack's base attack power, could become very high or very low. Pokemon Daycare = Your advantage Did you know that the Baby can learn a lot of different moves that it couldn't learn before? These moves are called Egg Moves. You can find the full list of Egg Moves for each Pokemon in the Pokemon Academy in POKEMON STADIUM 2. There are three types of breeding moves, we'll start off with... a) Pokemon Breading: Inherited Level-up moves The baby Pokemon that can eventually learn a move that they level up on, can be borned knowing that move. Maybe I should, make some diagrams to help my bad explaining. ------ ------ ---- Mother Father Baby ------ ------ ---- Arcanine Rhydon Growlithe Fire Rock/Ground Fire Level: 51 Level: 50 Level: 5 Bite Rock Throw Roar _Leer_ Earthquake Ember Ember Horn Drill _Leer_ Dig _Leer_ Just because, this baby Growlithe's father and mother both know Leer, and Growlithe can learn Leer by leveling up,(level 18 by the way) he hatched knowing the move! Just try to use your memory for most of the moves. b)Pokemon Breeding: Inherited TM Moves So, you found your favourite TM and now you realize one problem when you goto teach it ot your favourite Pokemon: "Oh my god! I only have _one_ of them!" Yes, this is a doozy of a problem, but luckily for you, the Father can pass on TMs that the baby can learn too. And after that, make your way to Professer Elm's House. Inside, talk to him until he lets you take one of the Pokemon Balls on the table. Now it gets interesting...who should you choose? Will it be...Totodile? Or Cyndaquill? Not Cyndaquill because it's Chikorita! Ask me? Well I chose Totodile by random. Who's the strongest you ask? That, I'm not sure, because I never really got the chance to compare their stats. But it's really up to you. Cyndaquill is a Fire type, Totodile is a Water type and Chikorita is a Grass type. And the Poke Balls are layed out in that order, Cynaquill, Totodile and Chikorita. Once you've made up your mind, pick the Poke Ball up. And proceed to the door -- but Professer Elm's Aid will stop you to give you a Potion. From here, just keep walking out and to Route 29. At Route 29, you should train your Pokemon up at least 3 Levels. Two or Three battles against a Level 2 Pokemon will promote you to level 6. As Pokemon grow more, the harder they will be to train. Anyways, back to the Walkthrough. At the beginning of the Route, just go left and at the bottom of your screen, you should see a man. Talk to him to learn how to capture a Pokemon. Now, back to the Walkthrough. Go left and proceed to do that until you get blocked off by small trees. At this point, go right until you see this boy standing there. On his right, there should be two row of stones. And there should also be a gap between the stone on the bottom. Go through it. Go up and right and you should see some grass. Go up and keep left until you come to a town. ############################# ######################################### ################## ###### ######################################### ################## ---------------- ################ Cherrygrove City Old Citizen ################ | | Item ---------------- /Town Map | | Shop Pokemon Centre \/ | | To Route 29 * -------------- | ---> To Route 30 --------------- Water Route . . | /Mystic Water . | \/ ## . | ## . | ## . _________ ## . |###### ## . |####################################################### . |####################################################### ---------------- Cherrygrove City ---------------- Pokemon Found at Night: Poilwag(Route 30) Hoot-Hoot Zubat Items: Town Map Mystic Water(later) ------------------------- Cherrygrove City Overview ------------------------- •Get Town Map •Get to Mr. Pokemon's House •Get PokeDex Walkthrough: Once you enter Cherrygrove city talk to the man standing near the path to Route 29 and accept his offer of showing you around Cherrygrove city. After you get the Town Map, goto the path to Route 30. From Route 30, go up and then right into the grassy fields. At that point go up and then turn left at the nearby house. Talk to the man inside to get a Berry. Let one of your Pokemon hold this and during a battle, it will recover 20 HP randomly. After that, get out of his house and talk to the tree on your left to get a Berry. At this point go right and then go up and keep going up until you come to a small house. Before you go in though, go and talk to the tree on your left to get a Poisoncure Berry. Now go in. Inside, you will find Professer Oak and Mr. Pokemon. Professer Oak will give you a PokeDex and then leave. As soon as you get out of Mr. Pokemon's House, you will get a call from Professer Elm telling you to get back to his lab right now. Navigate Route 30 until you get back to Cherrygrove City. Take the path to Route 29 -- but wait, you're blocked off and he's a Pokemon Trainer. But maybe, _maybe_ you should train your Pokemon up to level 10 before you fight this Trainer, because it will be much easier. ------------------- Pokemon Battle: ??? ------------------- Pokemon used: Cyndaquil Totodile Chikorita How to Beat him: This will be your first Official Pokemon Battle, and it will be quite easy if your Starting Pokemon is at level 10 or higher. If you chose Totodile, he will use Chikorita and if you chose Cyndaquil, he will use Totodile. It might be easier if you chose Totodile since Scratch is stronger than Tackle. But if you chose Cyndaquil or Chikorita you'll still do fine if your Starting Pokemon is level 10 or higher. About three attacks from a level 10 or above Pokemon will do the trick. With my level 11 Totodile, I had no troubles dispatching him. His moves are weak for the beginning, unless you chose Cyndaquil, and he has Scratch. After your battle, continue through Route 29 until you make it back to New Bark Town. At this point, go into Professer Elm's Lab. Inside you will find Professer Elm with a Poilce Officier. This is where you get give ??? a name. Once you gave ??? a name, the Police Officier will leave. Talk to Professer Elm and he will tell you what happened -- in full detail. After that begin your walk to get out of here, Professer Elm's Aid will once again interupt you to give you some Poke Balls. He won't do that if you didn't talk to Professer Elm. Now that you got some Poke Balls, it's time to go and put together a good strong Team. I only taught you all that stuff in the beginning to prepare you for team-building. The Pokemon in Route 30 are a bit stronger than the ones in Route 29. But for starters, a level 3 Pokemon should be trained in the level 2-3 to Pokemon zone. Build up about three new Pokemon to separate levels, or you could raise them evenly. At this point of the game, I had a level 11 Totodile, level 9 Hoot-Hoot and a level 9 Rattata. Not what you call an offensive team, but a simple team like that will do for the first Gym Leader. Well you're ready, make your way back to Route 30. At Route 30 go up and turn right into the grass fields again. From there, keep going up but stop at the sign. Instead, go left and now it's time to battle. Start by Youngster Joey, but don't worry, all these Pokemon Trainers here will only have a one or two Pokemon. After beating Youngster Joey, talk to him again an dyou could register his Phone Number. He will call you for a rematch and other interesting things. After that go up and just keep going up until you're blocked off by a small tree. At that point go down a bit and thne go right and up. After that go left until you could go down. Do that. Fight Bug Catcher Wade and when you beat him register his Phone Number. Go up and then keep going left until you come to Violet City. ----------- Violet City ----------- ############################################################################ #### ################################# ###### | | Rare Candy###### ############ | | ###### Route 36 Violet City Citizen | | ###### <--- / | | ###### Sprout Tower ------- | |###################### ############ M | ###################### ############ |_____________####################### ## Mart Gym ## ## Pokemon Centre To Route 31 ------------ ## Citizen ---> | | ###### \ | | \/ ------------ F | | ############### |___________| ############## ############## Route 32 ############## | ################################## ######################### ################################### ############################# ################################### -------------------- Violet City Overview -------------------- Enter Bellsprout Tower Get HM 05 Win Zephyr Badge Get EGG Welcome to Violet City! Home of the First Pokemon Gym. This is the big oppurtunity to win your first Official Pokemon Badge! First of all you could get HM 05 first. But that's opptional, you could get it later if you wish. I recommend you do it now because I'll write the walkthrough for it now. At the beginning of town, go left and then go up when you could. Keep going up until you come to a big tower. Go in. Inside the Tower, you will have to fight many battles, but all of the Trainers in here are not that good. By now you're Pokemon should be around level 10. Without furhter a due, here it is. From the beginning go up and left and then keep going up until you come to this warp thing. This will bring you to the second floor. Over here, go up a bit and hten go right and keep going right until you come to another warp point. Go up a bit and then keep going left and you will fight another Trainer. This battle should be a sinch. After the battle go down until you come to another warp point. From here keep going down and then go right, you will fight another Trainer, but once again, this will be easy. After this battle go right onto another warp point. At this point you will have to fight three seperate battles until you come to the Elder. But you're rival has already fought him. After your Rival leaves, it's your turn. ------- Sage Li ------- Pokemon used: Bellsrout Hoot-Hoot Awards: HM 05 If you chose Cynaquil, this battle will be nothing at all. But again, your Pokemon should be around level 10. You could dispatch him with no troubles if you have a Pidgey or a Hoot-Hoot. At level 07 Pidgey learns Gust. And at level 11, Hoot-Hoot learns Peck. Both these Moves will serve you well against him. Well when you finally beat him, grab the Escape Rope on the top right corner. And use it to get out of here. Once you got out of the Sprout Tower, heal your Pokemon at the Pokemon Centre and then head to the Gym. You will also battle several battles here too. But they're not that hard either. It's better to heal after each battle, this way you'll be fresh against Falkner. -------------- Leader Falkner -------------- Pokemon used: Pidgey Pidgeotto Awards: TM 31 Zephyr Badge His highest level Pokemon is at level 9, and I out-classed him by seven levels. So I had absolutley no troubles dispatching him. You could trade a Bellsprout for an Onix near the Pokemon Centre to make your life easier. Try to give your Pokemon some Berries, or rather let them hold it. Having an Onix on your Team and around the level of 11, you could make this battle go on for a long, long, time. But you got to watch out though the Pidgeotto is armed with Mud-Slap, which is a ground type move and Onix is weak against it. Send in your Starter to waste Pidgeotto. After you've won, you will receive a phone call from Professer Elm tellling you he sent his Aid to the nearby Pokemon Centre. Go there to receive an Egg containing a Togepi. After you get your Egg, get out of the Pokemon Centre and then go up. Then go left and keep going down, talk to the tree to get a Paralyzecure Berry. Just continue down. At Route 32, go down and then left to fight a Trainer. You don't have to fight him, but I recommend it. Around the grass fields, there are level six to seven Pokemon. All for your Pokemon to train. When you win this battle against Youngster, continue down until you see a girl. Talk to her to enage into a battle. Again, this is one of those optional battles. When you win, talk to her to register her Phone Number. After this battle continue down until you see a boy this will be yet another battle. Go down a bit and then go right and up to find a Great Ball, this is an upgrade of the Poke Ball and is better to catch Pokemon with. After that go down until you come to a Pokemon Centre, heal your Pokemon and then go down and left into the Union Cave. ---------- Union Cave ---------- Pokemon Found: Rattata Sandshrew Zubat Geodude Onix Items found: Great Ball Awakening X Attack TM 18 From the beginning go left and down then turn left to battle a Hiker. From there, go down and then right and just keep going right and then down to fight another Hiker. After you're battle, go down a bit and then move left and then go down until you come to an intersection where you have two choices; left and right. Go right until you can't go anymore then go down to fight one more battle. After that just walk into the light to imerge in one piece. ----------- Azalea Town ############## ----------- | ############## #################### ######### | ############## ##|__|#### |__| ########## | ############## ______ ##[ ]OOOOOO|_________________ ############## |_A____| ##### ####|___| ############## |______| _______ ___________ Citizen | | B | | | | M |_______| |_________| _____________________ | | | | To Route 33 |_________| _______________ ------> To Ilex Forest | | _____________________ <------- | GYM | | | ############## |______________| ############## | | ############## | | ############## | | ############## | ___ | ############## |_____| |____| ############## --- ############################################################################ ############################################################################ A: Kurt's House B: Slowpoke's Cave ----------- Azalea Town ----------- Welcome to Azalea Town! A.K.A home of the second GYM! Bulk your Pokemon up a couple of levels. Then get ready for a heck of a fight in the GYM. Of course, there are many things for you to do, so let's get right into it. -------------------- Azalea Town Overview -------------------- * Visit Kurt at his house * Proceed to the Slowpoke's Cave * Take out Team Rocket * Get HIVE BADGE * Enage into battle with Rival Now that we understand what we need to do, it's time to start doing them. Start off by visiting Kurt at his house. Refer to the Map. Then he will leave his house and you go ahead and follow him. Goto the Slowpoke's Well (Refer to Map for reference) ------------- Slowpoke Well ------------- Pokemon found: Slowpoke Items: Super Potion Pokemon Battles: 4 Make sure that your Pokemon are at least at Level 15 for this battle. My three Pokemon were: Hoot-Hoot Lv.17, Totodile Lv. 16, Onix Lv. 15. Now I know what you're thinking "What a stupid guy, his Pokemon are to high level" Hey, cut my some slack, I only had three Pokemon, and I wanted a Noctowl. There will be three Rockets and one big cheese. The three are not that strong, but the last guy may give you some trouble if your Pokemon are not level 15 and higher. Go through each of them and grab the SUPER POTION after the battle with the girl. Just keep going until you make it to the big cheese. ============================================================================ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=- Pokemon Battle: Rocket Executive =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Pokemon used: Koffing Items: None This battle is fairly simple if you have the right stuff. Just remember a couple of things: you just grabbed a SUPER POTION that you can use at any place and time. You catching my drift? If your strongest Pokemon falls, you won't be able to use the SUPER POTION. Keep that in mind. His Koffing is at level 14, if my active memory serves me correctly. Just keep your Pokemon alive and you'll do fine. ============================================================================ Once you defeated the big cheese, Kurt will confront you and take you back to his House. He can also make Poke Balls for you! All you need are APRICORN you can find these in little trees. I'll begin to mark them on the Maps. When he's done talking, exit his house and goto the back of his house. Talk to this tree and you'll win a WHITE APRICORN. This will allow you to make a Special Poke Ball at Kurt's House. So bring it to him if you wish. Make sure you bulk your Pokemon up a level or two. My Hoot-Hoot was level 19 by the time I finished the whole GYM. Of course, I fought everybody in the GYM, but most trainers are optional. Although I highly recommend that you defeat everybody for the expierience, you don't have to if you don't want to. When you're ready, goto the nearby GYM (the Rocket guy that was guarding the GYM will now be gone) jump in and you'll notice that inside, there's two female trainers standing beside each other. Believe it or not, they're both one trainer. They'll have two Pokemon. Once that battle is over, take a right and you will soon be challenged once again. Continue on and battle each trainer that you want to. And make it to the centre of the GYM and challenge Bugsy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leader: Bugsy --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon Used: Metapod Kakuna Scyther Items: None This GYM Leader is nothing but easy if you don't have the right stuff. By this I mean, you'll need some Pokemon to work for you. Check the chart, but if my memory serves me correctly, Flying, Fire will do well against his Bug-type Pokemon. His Scyther will cause some trouble for you if you let it connect with a Fury-Cutter. You can try and make it miss after the first blow. If his Scyther connects two or more times, this will hurt you bad. The move will damage you more every single time. Onix will help you out here, but any Pokemon that has a Paralyzing, Sleeping, or Accuracy-decreasing will stop his Scyther from reaching the maxium damage. Remember one thing: "THE LONGER THE BATTLE GOES, THE MORE IT'LL GOTO BUGSY'S ADVANTAGE" did you get that? Good, basic reminder, use any attack that can stop Scyther from attacking. Trust me, you do not want the Fury Cutter to connect four times. That'll do a LOT of damage. Just keep that point in mind and you should come out victorius. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ilex Forest --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items: Revive, TM 02(Headbutt) After you've won you're big battle aginst Bugsy, exit the Gym and heal your Pokemon in the Pokemon Centre. Exit the Pokemon Centre and turn left. You'll probably notice that you'll immediatley get challenged from your friendly neighborhood Rival! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon Battle: Rival --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon Used: Zubat, Ghastly, Croconaw, [or] Quilava, [or] Bayleef Items used: None This is another friendly battle with your Rival, you'll noticed that the starter you faced back in Cherrygrove City has evolved! (YAY!) Stop cheering! It's a bad thing. It'll be harder to beat this dude now. By now, you're Pokemon should be in the level range of 15-20, if you're Pokemon is over 16, this is won't be such a hard battle. But I found it easier with my Hoot-hoot at level 19, my Croconaw at level 18 and my Onix at level 14. This battle can be easily one if you counter with the approiate types. Counter Zubat with a Rock Throwing Onix, Ghastly with Hoot-Hoot's Forsight + Tackle or Croconaw's Bite to deal damage on Ghastly. Counter Croconaw with Bellsprout's Vine Whip, Quilava with Wooper's Water Gun and Quilava with...a strong physical attack. Take out the Ghastly as FAST as you possibly can. Got it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ilex Forest(Continued) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you've got the battle under your belt, continue left and through the house to get into Ilex Forest itself. Go north from the start until you see a boy. Take to him and he'll tell you that he's missing his Sensai's Farfetch'd is missing in forest. Your job is to look for the Farfetch'd. Take the path south near the boy and just follow the path until you find a bird(Farfetch'd) take to it to make it fly away. Follow the direction he took and talk to Farfetch'd again and repeat the process until you make him fly to the boy. Get back there and you'll notice that there's the boy's Sensai with him. Talk to the Sensai and he'll award you with the HM 01, Cut. Use the HM 01 to cut the nearby tree north of you. Continue along the path until you see a body of water. Continue along the single path until you're finally allowed to choose your own path; north and east. Take the path on the right, continue this path until you see another person. Talk to him to receive TM 02, Headbutt. Now, get back to the "get to choose path" and go north. Follow this path and go north in the next area to advance into... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Goldenrod City ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items: Radio Card, Bicycle, Squirtbottle, TM 45(Attract), TM 20(Return), TM 21(Frustration), TM 25(Thunder), Fire Blast(TM), Blizzard(TM), PlainBadge, Coin Case Yes, there will not be a map for Goldenrod, simply because everywhere is too complicated. I'll just walk you through you this like any other decent FAQ Author would. Start off by healing your Pokemon at the Pokemon Centre if necesesary. Now head north past one more building and turn left. Continue along until you see the a huge tower; go in. Now go right and talk to the last woman sitting behind the table. Say Yes and answer her questions in this order if you don't the answers: YES, YES, YES, NO, YES if my active memory serves me correctly. If you answered the questions correctly, you should win a Radio Card. This will allow you to listen to all sorts of Radio Channels. Now the next thing on the list is to grab a bike. Exit the tower and keep going right until you hit house. Backtrack and then head south until you aren't allowed to anymore. Go into the nearby house and talk to the man in here. Say yes and he'll give you a Bicycle. *ChaosDemon's One minute-tip* Press Start and choose the Bicycle, select the SEL option on the pop-up menu to register the bike. So from now on, press Select to get on the Bicycle! Now ride your new bike to the big building right above the Pokemon Centre and go in. This is what we call, the Game Corner. But before you can play, you'll need the coin case, so get outta here. From the outside of the building, go left and south until you can't go anymore, then go into the house on the right and down the stairs. In this place, south, south, south, and maybe even more south until you find an item, Coin Case. Now you can go back to the Game Corner and attempt to win some Coins. Talk to the man behind the counter and buy some coins. Once you've got coins you can talk to the slot machines to play. The ones on the left side of the Game Corner are roulette-style. And the ones on the right side of the Game Corner are "card-games." Once you've won enough Coins, you can trade them for prizes. *ChaosDemon's One minute tip* You might be able to find some coins by pressing A all over the place in the Game Corner Now that we know what the Game Corner is for, let's move onto other things. Now leave the Game Corner and do something you should've done a LONG time ago, and that's attempt to fight...The GYM Leader! Wait! There's other things for you to do...if it's after 6PM, use your radio to tune into the Password channel or a similar name and remember the password the station gives out. Now goto the Radio Tower and to the next floor, talk to the girl sitting on the chair and choose the correct password to add 1 POINT to your card. Once you've reached the required points you can trade them for prizes. Here's the table: _________________________ |# of points| -Prize- | | 2 | Ultra Ball | ------------------------| 2 | Full Restore -------------------------- 3 | Rare Candy -------------------------- 3 | Nugget -------------------------- 5 | Protein -------------------------- 5 | Iron -------------------------- 5 | Carbos -------------------------- 5 | Calcium -------------------------- 5 | HP Up Now that you know this, let's take on the Gym Leader, you should also maybe train a little bit or get some of your Pokemon into shape. This will help you out for the tough battle that lies ahead. I recommend an Onix to be added to your team against the Normal slaughters of the Goldenrod gym. Head to the Goldenrod gym and then fight the trainers in here and slowly make your way towards the Gym leader in the centre of the Pokemon Gym. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gym Leader Battle: Whitney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon used: Clefairy, Miltank Items to be earned: Plainbadge, TM 45 This will be the rougher battles in the game, she has Miltank that can take a lot of abuse before it falls down. To the addition that, it can also deal a LOT of abuse to you before YOU go down (if that happens, and I think it will) the Milktank is armed with Rollout, a very strong Rock attack. The key to this battle is to stop Rollout before it gets to 100 damage, this can be done by Onix's Bind attack. The fire and flying types do not even stand a chance in the sturggle against Miltank, although the Clefairy isn't much of a challenge, Miltank can wipe you out in a lot of different ways; and that's lethal no matter what game you're playing. Don't hesistate to use items when absolutley neccessary, but you're only helping Milktank so use Items as a last resort. To get an Onix, you can find one in the Union Cave or by trading with a boy in Violet city. A Geodude can also help out, with Rock Throw, so the strategy here is not to WEAR down Miltank, but to take it down with raw force. This may take a while but you'll soon come out sucessful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Goldenrod city(continued ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After the battle, the leader Whitney will cry and say you're a meany and junk, so leave the Gym and go right back in. Then, talk to Whitney and you'll win the Plain Badge and TM45, Attract. This TM can make the opposite gender get atrracted to your Pokemon and it won't attack you. You probably want to get on to the next city now right? Thought so. Leave the GYM and take a quick left then procceed north. Keep going north until you reach the national park. Go northeast here and look for an opening on the fence that surrounds the park. Go there and take a left. Then keep going until you can go south, do that. Keep going south and you'll soon reach TM 28(Dig.) Now with another item under your belt, go through the big house on the east part of the park. In this next area, you can train your Pokemon a little bit against the trainers and then keep going east. You see a girl here, and she's not interested in battling. Talk to her and now go back to Goldenrod city. Head right past the gym until you aren't allowed to do so anymore. You'll find a small house here go in and talk to BOTH of the girls. Starting with the lower one then talk to the girl watering the plants. She will now give you the SQUIRTBOTTLE to put in the key pocket. If it's sunday and you're looking for another TM. Goto the Goldenrod city Mart(the huge one, you can't miss it) goto the second highest floor and look for girl behind the counter. Talk to her and if you're leading Pokemon doesn't like you, you'll get TM 21 Frustration but if you're leading Pokemon _likes_ you, you'll get TM 20, Return (why get one when you can get two??? Ahh...ChaosDemon has read the cheap book) Finally, it's time to stop stalling, it's time to move onto the next city. But before we go on, make sure you have a strong Pokemon, a water type in paticular, or use Dig you just found. Why? You'll soon find out. I should also mention one more thing, if it's Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, you can goto the house right before the national park and talk to the man in there for a FREE of charge safari to find the strongest Bug Pokemon and win stuff doing it! You also get to keep the last Pokemon you find. Scyther, Pinser and a whole lot of others can only be found in the Bug Catching Contest. It's also a great place for training level 10-17 Pokemon. Now, let's get on with the walkthrough. Go through that big house once again and to the girl that was standing near the tree that moves. Use the Squirtbottle and it will wake up to challenge you... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ONE TIME POKEMON CHANCE: Sudowoodo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A great Pokemon to be added to your collection. It will be at level 20 and is a well-armed Pokemon with some heavy array of attacks. Mimic, Low Kick and one other I believe. If you're too scared to fight and are about to lose, go ahead and use Whirlwind, Teleport, Roar or other attacks that take you out of the battle instantly, but if you blow this oppurtunity, you don't get another one, a level 20 Pokemon should be a great addition for the upcoming battles ahead. It's a ROCK type mind you, an Ultra Ball or Great Ball is your only chance, or maybe some special Poke Balls from Kirk. If you've been reading the walkthrough, you'll know that with ChaosDemon's one-minute-tip, you can get an Ultra Ball without forking over a dime. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Journey to the Next Town ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Items: TM 18(Rock Smash) Once you've sucessfully taken care of Sudowoodo, take a right, and then talk to the "roundish" man here to recieve TM 18, Rock Smash. Now go left and keep going so then go north when you're allowed to. Keep doing that and you'll soon emerge into... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ecruteak City ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Items: HM Surf Welcome to... yes, that's right, it's me, it's me, it's T.J.T bringing you through Ecruteak City with the most detailed-walkthrough in town! You should have a team of Pokemon at level 25 by now, if not, you'll just have to make due. Look around for an old man with glasses and then go into the house beside him. Go up the stage in here and talk to the woman from left to right, or a series of battles facing, Umbreon, Flareon, Jolten, Vaporeon, and Espeon. Once you've defeated them, talk to the man off the stage and he'll award you with HM 05(Surf.) Unfortunetly, this is where I got to and I'll have to put...-UPDATE- Yes, I'm back! Head into the tower on the northwest part of town. Talk to the two people in here and take a left then north and finally take a right and down. You should soon your Rival here so get ready for a battle, I just did this at first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pokemon Battle: Rival ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pokemon Used: Haunter, Magnetmite, Bayleef, Zubat Items: None Here's another rival battle to lighten up your day. Yes, I'm being sarca- stic, but the point is, you got another Pokemon battle to conquer. Your Rival's Pokemon range is at 18-22, yours should be 19-23 or so. If you can get your Pokemon to be over 25, you should have no problem with this guy. Counter Haunter with Kadabra(Confusion, Psybeam), Magnetmite with Growlithe(Ember), Bayleef with Noctowl(Peck) or Growlithe(Ember), and Zubat with Growlithe(Ember) That pretty much sums this battle up, look out for the Curse from Haunter, he'll try to use this pretty quickly, and that Curse will hound you for the rest of the battle(it will slowly cut away your HP), so lead off with a decoy, and when it uses Curse, counter with Kadabra. Then bring in the mentioned Pokemon to counter. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecruteak City(continued) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After the rival battle, you'll go through a cinema with you falling through the floor and into a secret room. You'll now go face-to-face with three odd looking creatures(Pokemon, ;) now watch this and then go down south when it's over. Talk to this guy here and you just made a new friend! This guy's name is Eusine, and he's been searching for Suicune for more than 10 years, and you helped him find Suicune and Eusine finally managed to see Suicune! So for that, he's your new friend. Go south and take the ladder upto the first floor again. Now, leave the Burned Tower and head into the Pokemon Centre. You should see a short cinema here with someone runnig out of the Pokemon Centre. This guy's name is Bill, and he's one of those people in the Pokemon World that is generous enough to _give_ you a pokemon. He'll take to you for a bit and then he'll run off. Heal your Pokemon in the Pokemon Centre. You will probably want another Pokemon to add to your collection, if not, skip the next paragraph. Leave the Pokemon Centre, and head back to Goldenrod city. Now with your new friends met in Ecruteak city, you can get a new Pokemon to add to your collection! If you want to find out whom you'll get, I won't tell you! Anyways, go south from that guard house and then go south past the train track, then take a left. There should be a house small house here(I'm doing this from memory, but it's one of the houses on the left side) now go into that small house(Bill's House) and now talk to the man on the left side of the of table. He'll give you an Eevee! It's classifed as "EVOLUTION" in the Poke Dex, and for good reason. It can evolve into 5 different Pokemon; Jolteon (electric), Flareon(fire), Vaporeon(water), Umbreon(dark) and Espeon(psychic) Flareon, Jolten and Vaporeon can be evolved with the (in exact order) FIRE STONE, THUNDER STONE and the WATER STONE. For Vaporeon and Umbreon, it has to be evolved through friendly Evolution. Alright, with another friend met, it's time to take on the Gym leader for the badge. Get ready for a heck of a battle, the Attract TM you got from Whitney will be able to help you out a bit too. Teach it to anybody on your team to give them an extra edge if you're facing the opposite gender. Goto the Ecruteak City Gym. Once you get in here, you'll notice that everybody seem to be standing on a black platform. But for some odd reason, everytime you try to step on it, you fall through the ground. Yes, I'm gonna help you too, there's a basic thing to remember, the direction the trainers are staring at are safe. Touché? Okay. Follow the advice and you'll make it to Morty in one piece. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- GYM LEADER: Morty ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon used: Gengar, Haunter Items to be earned: Badge, TM Here's a trainer that uses Dark and Ghost type Pokemon. If you're lucky, they'll use Curse, a move that splits the user's HP in half in order to hound the Cursed Pokemon for the rest of the battle. Remember the last battle against your rival, who also uses Curse? You sure do, so the tactic here is to use a decoy Pokemon to be cursed then send in the Psychic type to blast them with Psychic attacks. I used Alakazam to wipe out each and everyone of those Pokemon of Morty's and that's what you gotta do too. Use a Kadabra if you don't have Alakazam, so now I'm going to leave you with the shortest strategy so far for a Gym leader. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Journey to the Next city: Olivine ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, with another badge under your belt, it's time for you to move on and attempt another badge! Yes, this is like die-hard torture, but, with practice, you can become a Pokemon Trainer that is _almost_, _almost_ as good as me. I'm bragging, not one of y'all out there are as good as me, take that Ash Ketchum! But, unfortunetly, this FAQ wasn't created for bragging purposes, so let's get on with the walkthrough. After the Gym you should heal your Pokemon. Then keep going left to leave this town and then continue left. Soon you won't be able to go anymore, then go south and keep going south until you reach Olivine City. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Olivine City ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items: Badge, TM(Iron Tail), Medicine, HM 04(Strength) This is Olivine City, home of the 5th Gym leader! Yep, it's not that pleasent, but you'll have your chances to become the elite player you always wanted to be. Yes, training is possible around here, go north and to the grassy areas. Before you do anything though, head into one of the nearby houses and talk to someone who likes a Sailor from Red and Blue, or a well built man sitting near a table. Talk to him and you will recieve HM 04, Strength. You'll need this in the near future, so keep that Item tight and head out the door. If you go into the Gym right now, you'll notice that the Gym have been abandoned. You earned HM 03, Surf in the last city, so use it to get around and surf on bodies of water. I'm sorry, but this is where I'm currently at in the game, so I'll have to leave you now. And yes, this city _IS_ home of the Battle Tower! ...more coming soon =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Battle Tower =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Yes, one of the most annoying things in Crystal is of course the Battle Tower. I'm going to guide you through the battle tower myself, with, of course the most detailed strategy in town. The Battle Tower is located in Olivine city, and is a new addition to Pokemon Crystal. The trainer(you) will have to go through 10 floors of hardcore-slaughter against other trainers, but with a twist...for each floor you can only have the allotted Pokemon level, what I'm trying to say is, on the first floor you can only have level 10 Pokemon, and on the second floor 20, third, 30, etc., so with the introduction taken care of, let's get on with the strategy. You should also take not that the trainers' Pokemon will be randomly selected. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The First Floor ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -RANDOMLY SELECTED POKEMON- The Pokmeon list and then the moves in brakkets. -STRATEGY- For the first floor, the defense of your Pokemon gotta be really, really good. Your HP will be very low and that means your defense will be pretty weak. Use all the Iron you can possibly afford to, or otherwise your Battle Tower dreams will burn down in vain. Defense = Good, got it? Thought so. So that's why I'm gonna use the Pokemon Breeding FAQ from NickWhiz1. -THANKS TO NickWhiz1 FOR THIS PART OF THE FAQ!!!!!- ------------------------INTRODUCTION TO BREEDING------------------------ Want a Skarmory with Drill Peck? How about a 5-way max Starmie? Or maybe a 5-way max Marowak with Rock Slide and Screech? Well, in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, you can do this and MUCH more. The amazing (and complex) breeding system allows you to breed moves, genes (statistics), and a combination of the two. Now you can have Crunching Growlithes, Reversal Primeapes, Mirror Coat Blastoises, and much, much more. This guide will attempt to break down the breeding system, including descriptions of how to pass genes (stats)/moves, who can have what move bred to them, and who can breed with each other. And for you advanced breeders out there, there's a special section on chain breeding. -------------------------------THE BASICS------------------------------- Before you start trying to get your Drill Peck Skarmorys and such, you have to know the basics of breeding. I've compiled a small FAQ of the basics of breeding. ======================================================================== Q: What is breeding? ======================================================================== It is the system in Gold/Silver/Crystal that allows you to mate two Pokemon and create eggs. These eggs will hatch into Pokemon, and may even have some moves it normally doesn't get to have! ======================================================================== Q: What species will come out of your egg? ======================================================================== The species will always be the lowest evolution of the female (except when breeding with Ditto, when the baby will be the lowest evolution of the opposite parent of Ditto). ======================================================================== Q: Where do I breed? ======================================================================== There is a building south of Goldenrod City (on Route 34) called the Pokemon Daycare. Give your Pokemon to the two carekeepers, and maybe the two Pokemon will breed. ======================================================================== Q: How long will it take to get an egg? ======================================================================== Once the two Pokemon are in the daycare center, a random number between 0 and 255 will be selected. Every time you take a step, the number will be reduced by 1. Once the number hits zero, another random number from 0 to 255 will be chosen. This will decide whether you get an egg or not. This random number will be compared to a precalculated number as shown below: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If the two Pokemon are of the same species and have different ID numbers, the random number will be compared to 254. If the two Pokemon are of the same species and have identical ID numbers, the random number will be compared to 177. If the two Pokemon are of different species and have different ID numbers, the random number will be compared to 128. If the two Pokemon are of different species and have identical ID numbers, the random number will be compared to 51. If the two Pokemon are incapable of breeding, the random number will be compared to 0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ At this point, if the random number is lower than the precalculated number, an egg will be born, and you can go pick it up at the daycare. If not, no egg will be born. In either case, a new random number will be chosen from 0 to 255, and the process begins anew. All of these numbers are hidden, however. ======================================================================== Q: Suppose I don't want to calculate the numbers. How do I find out how compatible my two Pokemon are? ======================================================================== While the two Pokemon are in the yard of the daycare, walk up to one of them and press A. You'll get one of these messages: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ It shows interest in (the other Pokemon). (precalculated number: 254) It's friendly with (the other Pokemon). (precalculated number: 177/128) It appears to care for (the other Pokemon). (precalculated number: 51) It has no interest in (the other Pokemon). (precalculated number: 0) It's brimming with energy! (precalculated number: 0) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================================================================== Q: This is all fine and dandy, but why can't I breed my Starmie with a Blastoise? ======================================================================== Genderless Pokemon can not breed normally. They can only breed with Ditto. ======================================================================== Q: OK....but why won't my Mewtwo and Ditto breed? ======================================================================== Some Pokemon are incapable of breeding. They are: Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, Unown, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Raikou, Entei, Suicine, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi ======================================================================== Q: What are some other reasons my Pokemon won't breed? ======================================================================== *The two Pokemon are the same gender *They are incompatible *They are both genderless and neither of them is Ditto *They are both Dittos I hope that gives a good introduction. Be warned, the rest of this guide (at least some of it) is not for the weak-minded. Proceed at your own risk... ======================================================================== Q: What are the odds of getting a male/female baby of each species? ======================================================================== Check the "Gender Ratios" section to see. Also, the gender of a Pokemon is dependant on both the gender ratio for that Pokemon and the Attack gene of that Pokemon. Males have higher Attack genes than females. Since the Attack gene is random in breeding, the baby's gender will be somewhat random, depending on the gender ratio. Check the Gender Ratios section for more information. ======================================================================== Q: How long does it take an egg to hatch? ======================================================================== It depends on the species of the egg. If the egg is a Magikarp, it takes 1,280 steps to hatch. If the egg is a Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, or Togepi, it takes 2,560 steps to hatch. If the egg is a Caterpie, Weedle, Pidgey, Rattata, Spearow, Zubat, Geodude, Sentret, Hoothoot, Ledyba, or Spinarak, it takes 3,840 steps to hatch. If the egg is a Onix, Mr. Mime, Scyther, Pinsir, Misdreavus, Heracross, Mantine, Skarmory, Tyrouge, Smoochum, Elekid, or Magby, it takes 6,400 steps to hatch. If the egg is an Omanyte or Kabuto, it takes 7,680 steps to hatch. If the egg is an Eevee or Aerodactyl, it takes 8,960 steps to hatch. If the egg is a Chansey, Lapras, Snorlax, Dratini, or Larvitar, it takes 10,240 steps to hatch. If the egg is anything else, it takes 5,120 steps to hatch. This number is invisible to you, like so many others.... ---------------------------HOW TO BREED STATS--------------------------- We all know how much of a pain it is to get Pokemon with high genes (stats) in Red/Blue/Yellow. In fact, the odds of getting the highest possible set of genes in the wild was 1:65536! You might be asking "What exactly are genes?" Well, here's a quick tutorial... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Each Pokemon has 5 genes. They are HP, Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. All of them are independent except for HP, which is calculated from the other four. A "gene" is actually a hexidecimal number ranging from 0-F (0-15). This, factored in with the Pokemon's level and the amount of "Stat Experience" it has, determines the stats of your Pokemon. These genes are hidden from you (much like the random numbers involved with breeding). To figure out the genes of your Pokemon, Rare Candy them to Level 50 or Level 100, and make sure they have not fought in ANY battles or have had ANY vitamins. Then, use the following formulas: At Level 50: (max wild stat at level 50) - (your Pokemon's stat at Level 50) At Level 100: [(max wild stat at level 100) - (your Pokemon's stat at Level 100)] / 2 To find the max wild stats of your Pokemon, go to the Skill/Stat Finder (http://skill-statfinder.virtualave.net/). Once you have determined your genes, you can now learn how to breed stats. NOTE: I could write a whole guide on genes and such, but this information is all you need to know to breed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now, we're going to take our genes and determine what the genes of the baby of two Pokemon will be. The genes of the baby are dependant on the gender of the baby, the parents, and a certain degree of randomness. This chart will tell what parent the baby will inherit its genes from based on all possible scenarios: _____________________________________________________________ |Mother |Father |Baby's Gender|Genes inherited from:| |-------------------------------------------------------------| |normal Female|normal Male|Male |Mother | | |Female |Father | |normal Female|Ditto |Male/Female |Ditto | |Ditto |normal Male|Male/Female |Ditto | |Genderless |Ditto |Genderless |Ditto | |Ditto |Genderless |Genderless |Ditto | As you see, unless Ditto is involved, the genes will be inherited from the opposite gender from the gender of the baby. If Ditto is involvded, the baby will inherit Ditto's genes. Now comes the actual calculations. Bear with me, this can get REALLY confusing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: The 4-number values throughout this section that refer to genes are displayed as (Attack gene)(Defense gene)(Speed gene)(Special Gene). And remember, Special Attack and Special Defense are based on the same gene (Special). Let's say I have a male Pikachu with genes of 59AE and a female Vulpix with genes of F385. We will assume the baby is female. At this point, we look up to the chart. Since the parents are both Normal (non-Genderless/non-Ditto), and the baby is female, the genes will come from the father. So, we will throw out Vulpix's genes. We will take Pikachu's genes (59AE) and run them through a series of steps. 1. We will first pick two random 2-digit hex numbers (like 5F or E7). For the sake of this, we will pick 7D and F9. 7D will be Attack/Defense, and F9 will be Speed/Special. These numbers are hidden. 2. Now, we fit the values into the following format to figure out the genes Attack Gene = left digit of Random Number for Attack/Defense Defense Gene = parent's Defense gene Speed Gene = left digit of Random Number for Speed/Special Special Gene = parent's Special gene OR parent's Special gene +8 (if the parent's Special gene is 0-7)/-8 (if the parent's Special gene is 8-15) 3. Let's fit the values in for this situation: Attack Gene = 7 (7D) Defense Gene = 9 Speed Gene = F (F9) Special Gene = E or 6 (E [14] - 8 ) 4. So, Pikachu's genes will be 79FE or 79F6. Now, what about HP? 5. To figure out HP, transform each individual gene into a 4-digit binary number. Here's a small conversion chart to do this: 0 = 0000 1 = 0001 2 = 0010 3 = 0011 4 = 0100 5 = 0101 6 = 0110 7 = 0111 8 = 1000 9 = 1001 A = 1010 B = 1011 C = 1100 D = 1101 E = 1110 F = 1111 6. Applying this to Pikachu, we come up with 0111 0111 1001 or 1001 1111 1111 1110 0110 7. HP is determined by looking at the lowest digit (right-most) of each number, in the following order: Attack, Defense, Speed, Special. 8. For Pikachu, it will be 1110 = E both ways. So Pikachu's HP gene is E (14). 9. One more note. Two Pokemon with the same Defense and the same Special gene will never breed. Never. That means you can't breed two Shinies or two max-gened Pokemon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now that we have a understanding of how it works, let's try some special problems: Let's assume I want a Shiny Pokemon... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To get a shiny Pokemon, the following conditions must be met: The left digit of the random Attack/Defense value must be 2, 3, 6, 7, A, B, E, or F. The gene-passing parent's Defense gene must be A. The left digit of the random Speed/Special value must be A. The gene-passing parent's Special must be 2 or A. You can figure out the chance of getting a Shiny by determining the odds of the desired gender of the baby, then look below: Remember, one of the parents must meet the requirements above, and the desired gender is the inverse of that parent. If the baby has a 100% chance of getting the desired gender, or one of its parents is a Ditto that meets the above requirements, the odds it will be shiny is 1:64 (8:512). If the baby has a 87.5% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be shiny is 7:512. If the baby has a 75% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be shiny is 3:256 (6:512). If the baby has a 50% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be shiny is 1:128 (4:512). If the baby has a 25% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be shiny is 1:256 (2:512). If the baby has a 12.5% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be shiny is 1:512. NOTE: The odds of finding a shiny in the wild is 16:65536, or 1:4096 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now, I want a max-gene Pokemon: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To get a max-gene Pokemon, the following conditions must be met: The left digit of the random Attack/Defense value must be F. The gene-passing parent's Defense gene must be F. The left digit of the random Speed/Special value must be F. The gene-passing parent's Special must be 7 or F. You can figure out the chance of getting a max-gene Pokemon by determining the odds of the desired gender of the baby, then look below: Remember, one of the parents must meet the requirements above, and the desired gender is the inverse of that parent. If the baby has a 100% chance of getting the desired gender, or one of its parents is a Ditto that meets the above requirements, the odds it will be max-gened is 1:512 (128:65536). If the baby has a 87.5% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be max-gened is 7:4096 (112:65536). If the baby has a 75% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be max-gened is 3:2048 (96:65536). If the baby has a 50% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be max-gened is 1:1024 (64:65536). If the baby has a 25% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be max-gened is 1:2048 (32:65536). If the baby has a 12.5% chance of getting the desired gender, the odds it will be max-gened is 1:4096 (16:65536). NOTE: The odds of finding a max-gened Pokemon in the wild is 1:65536, and believe me, that's some PRETTY long odds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ And that's about it for stats. This is probably the most complicated section of the guide. The next part should (hopefully) be better. ---------------------------HOW TO BREED MOVES--------------------------- NOTE: Only a male can pass on attacks. This is true for both normal breeding and breeding with Ditto. Not only can you pass genes on, you can also pass moves on. This allows you to give Pokemon moves they would not normally learn any other way. There are four ways for Pokemon to get moves: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. The first way is natural moves the Pokemon learns by Level 5. A Pokemon can have anywhere from 1 to 4 moves by this method. The chart below tells how many spots a Pokemon will have open if it were to only have these kind of moves on it when it is born: ______________________________________________________________________ |Open Spots|Pokemon | |----------------------------------------------------------------------| | 0|Wobbuffet, Girafarig | |======================================================================| | 1|Venonat, Grimer, Lapras, Porygon, Chinchou, Cleffa, | | |Igglybuff, Hoppip, Snubbull | |======================================================================| | 3|Sandshrew, Zubat, Oddish, Paras, Poliwag, Abra, Bellsprout,| | |Tentacool, Geodude, Magnemite, Farfetch'd, Voltorb, | | |Lickitung, Kangaskhan, Horsea, Mr. Mime, Pinsir, Magikarp, | | |Aerodactyl, Snorlax, Ledyba, Murkrow, Gligar, Slugma, | | |Swinub, Corsola, Remoraid, Delibird, Stantler, Smeargle, | | |Tyrogue, Magby | |======================================================================| | 2|Any Pokemon not listed above | 2. Next, if both of the parents know a move the baby will learn naturally by leveling up, the baby will have that attack. This can be done with multiple attacks. 3. After this, the game will check if the father has a move that the baby can only get via breeding. If so, the baby will know it when it is born. This can be done with multiple attacks as well. 4. Finally, if the father knows a Gold/Silver/Crystal TM or HM, and the baby can learn that TM or HM, the baby will have it. And whadda ya know, you can do this with multiple moves too! What are the TMs/HMs? ______________________________________________________________________ |TMs | |----------------| |---------------| |---------------| |---------------| |01|Dynamic Punch| |16|Icy Wind | |31|Mud Slap | |46|Thief | |02|Headbutt | |17|Protect | |32|Double Team | |47|Steel Wing | |03|Curse | |18|Rain Dance | |33|Ice Punch | |48|Fire Punch | |04|Rollout | |19|Giga Drain | |34|Swagger | |49|Fury Cutter | |05|Roar | |20|Endure | |35|Sleep Talk | |50|Nightmare | |06|Toxic | |21|Frustration | |36|Sludge Bomb | |---------------| |07|Zap Cannon | |22|Solarbeam | |37|Sandstorm | |HMs | |08|Rock Smash | |23|Iron Tail | |38|Fire Blast | |---------------| |09|Psych Up | |24|Dragonbreath| |39|Swift | |01|Cut | |10|Hidden Power | |25|Thunder | |40|Defense Curl| |02|Fly | |11|Sunny Day | |26|Earthquake | |41|Thunderpunch| |03|Surf | |12|Sweet Scent | |27|Return | |42|Dream Eater | |04|Strength | |13|Snore | |28|Dig | |43|Detect | |05|Flash | |14|Blizzard | |29|Psychic | |44|Rest | |06|Whirlpool | |15|Hyper Beam | |30|Shadow Ball | |45|Attract | |07|Waterfall | And keep in mind, you can NOT pass down Red/Blue/Yellow TMs/HMs unless they are also Gold/Silver/Crystal TMs/HMs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now, how do we decide exactly what moves the baby will have? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Let's assume the baby will be a Mareep. Mareep's first 2 moves are Tackle and Growl. MAREEP *Tackle *Growl 2. Now, let's see what the parents have: PIKACHU (M) AMPHAROS (F) *Thundershock *Thunderpunch *Thunder *Tackle *Thunderbolt *Thunder Wave *Thunder Wave *Cotton Spore Thunder Wave fits the second requirement, being a move both parents know and the baby learns naturally, thus Thunder Wave will be passed down. MAREEP *Tackle *Growl *Thunder Wave 3. Now, take a look at Pikachu. He knows the move "Thunder". Thunder is a TM move. Mareep can learn Thunder. Put these together, and you discover the baby will know Thunder. MAREEP *Tackle *Growl *Thunder Wave *Thunder 4. Look at Pikachu again. Notice "Thunderbolt". Unless you are playing Crystal, there is no other way to give Mareep Thunderbolt (unless you're a GameSharker ^_~) other than to breed it. Again, Pikachu is the father, so he will be able to pass on Thunderbolt to Mareep. MAREEP *Tackle *Growl *Thunder Wave *Thunder *Thunderbolt Wait a minute, that's not right! Pokemon can only have up to 4 moves at once! In this case, the highest move, Tackle, will be pushed off the list. The baby's final set will be: MAREEP *Growl *Thunder Wave *Thunder *Thunderbolt NOTE: I'm not entirely sure of the actual process, but this is what I think it is. If anyone has something different, drop me a line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ One of the most unique breeding problems in the game is how to get Heal Bell onto Chansey. The only Pokemon that can get the move is Miltank, and Snubbull is the only Pokemon it can be bred to. Miltank and Snubbull can breed. Snubbull and Chansey can breed. Here's the bad part: Miltanks are always female, so it can't pass on Heal Bell to Snubbull. How do we get Heal Bell on it, then? Only one Pokemon can help us, Smeargle. You can catch them only in the grass outside the entrance to one of the puzzles at the top of the Ruins of Alph. There are two ways to use Smeargle. I'll use the Heal Bell problem as an example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- METHOD #1: Recommended for breeding only single moves. 1. Raise a Miltank to L53 so it learns Heal Bell. 2. Put it in the front of your party. 3. Go to the grass patch, and find a male Smeargle. 4. Once in battle, use Heal Bell. Miltank will be faster, so she will attack first. 5. Smeargle will then use the ability "Sketch". This ability allows Smeargle to copy the last move used against it in a wild or in-game trainer battle. Since you used Heal Bell last, it will Sketch Heal Bell. 6. Catch the Smeargle. 7. Now, we will use a technique called chain breeding to get Heal Bell from Smeargle to Chansey. Since these two cannot breed, we'll have to use Snubbull to pass the attack. (This will serve as an introduction to chain breeding. The Chain Breeding section will go more in-depth and give more complex examples.) 8. First, breed this male Smeargle with a female Snubbull/Granbull. All you need is a single male Snubbull baby with Heal Bell to make this work. 9. Now, we will breed this male Heal Bell Snubbull with a Chansey. All of the resulting Chansey babies will have Heal Bell. 10. Enjoy! ^_^ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is all fine and dandy if you only want one move. If you want multiple moves, however, we have to do a little more. The first way to do this is actually a variation of Method #1: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ METHOD #1*: Use to breed multiple moves 1. 7. Now, let's assume, for some strange reason, I want Present on the same Chansey. We're going to have to use Sketch again. Problem is, Smeargle needs to learn Sketch again. He learns Sketch again at Levels 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, and 91. Depending on the level of your Smeargle, raise him up to the appropriate level for him to learn Sketch. 8. The rest of this trick will only work in Silver/Crystal for this particular scenario. Gold players should continue reading to get the general concept, but you Goldies will not be able to pull this off using this method. 9. Go to Ice Cave with Smeargle in front. 10. Find a wild Delibird (gender does not matter). 11. Use Heal Bell to ensure you can use Sketch to copy Present from Delibird. If Smeargle goes first, he will Sketch nothing, and since Sketch has 1 PP, once he uses it, he can't use it again unless it is replenished. 12. Delibird will either retreat or use Present. Whether it goes first or second will not matter (hopefully). 13. Depending on the damage done, if Smeargle can survive another shot, keep him in. If not, retreat, heal, and try again. 14. Use Sketch. Smeargle will copy Present. Now you have Present and Heal Bell! 15. Now, we will use chain breeding again. 16. First, breed this male Smeargle with a female Snubbull/Granbull. All you need is a single male Snubbull baby with Heal Bell and Present to make this work. 17. Now, we will breed this male Heal Bell/Present Snubbull with a Chansey. All of the resulting Chansey babies will have Heal Bell/Present. 18. Enjoy! ^_^ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You can repeat this method as much as you need to to get all the moves you need. But suppose there are some moves you can't access this way. That's where the next method comes in: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ METHOD #2: Recommended only if you can't get a certain move after using both #1 and #1*. 1. This requires 2 Game Boy Colors, 2 Gold/Silver/Crystal (any) games, and both games must have Mystery Gift enabled. 2. I'll use the Heal Bell/Present scenario. Let's say you have a Smeargle with Heal Bell on Gold (we'll call this Game #1) and you don't have access to Delibird. Game #2 is Silver. 3. On Game #2, catch a Delibird. 4. Return all the Pokemon on Game #2 to the PC except Delibird. 5. Save this game, then turn it off. 6. On Game #1, make sure Smeargle has a Sketch (or does have it by Step #9). 7. Save this game, then turn it off. 8. Turn both games on, then use the Mystery Gift option. 9. Now, on Game #1, go to the Trainer House in Viridian City. Go to the battle arena. At this point, your Heal Bell Smeargle needs to have a "Sketch". Save before you go into battle. 10. Go into battle. You will be battling the Pokemon from Game #2. 11. Use Heal Bell to ensure you can use Sketch to copy Present from Delibird. If Smeargle goes first, he will Sketch nothing, and since Sketch has 1 PP, once he uses it, he can't use it again unless it is replenished. 12. Delibird will use Present. Whether it goes first or second will not matter (hopefully). 13. Depending on the damage done, if Smeargle can survive another shot, continue the battle. If not, turn the game off and try again. You will be right before the battle arena, and your one-battle-a-day will not be used up. 14. 18. Enjoy! ^_^ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ And that's about all there is to it! The next three sections will provide information on what moves can be bred down to each Pokemon, what Pokemon can breed, and the probability of getting each Pokemon with a desired gender. The final section will give a more thorough description of chain breeding. ----------------------------BREEDABLE MOVES----------------------------- This is a list of all possible parents for each possible bred move for each Pokemon. This list took a LOT of time to assemble. A lot. Actually, I was going to do that, but then I realized it would be pointless to do it for each and every move, as it would take a while, so I'll just list all the moves each Pokemon can get through breeding. Moves with Crystal next to it can only be bred that move in Crystal. ______________________________________________________________________ |Bulbasaur | Check this (obnoxiously long) chart to see! This only lists the lowest evolutions of the lines that can breed, because for breeding, that's basically all you need! And for those baby Pokemon, they're in their proper numerical order. And remember, you must evolve any baby Pokemon to let it be able to breed! (They will have (Baby) next to them.) For Nidoran F/M, I'll give the % of getting each of them via breeding. Also, I have placed the required Attack genes for each species to have a specific gender in this small chart: 100% Female = 0-F 87.5% Female = 0-D 12.5% Male = E-F 75% Female = 0-B 25% Male = C-F 50% Female = 0-7 50% Male = 8-F 25% Female = 0-3 75% Male = 4-F 12.5% Female = 0-1 87.5% Male = 2-F 100% Male = 0-F And now, the main chart! ________________________________ |Lowest Evolution|% Male|% Female| |--------------------------------| |Bulbasaur | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Charmander | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Squirtle | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Caterpie | 50%| 50%| |Weedle | 50%| 50%| |Pidgey | 50%| 50%| |Rattata | 50%| 50%| |Spearow | 50%| 50%| |Ekans | 50%| 50%| |Sandshrew | 50%| 50%| |Nidoran F/M | 50%| 50%| (I think) |Vulpix | 25%| 75%| |Zubat | 50%| 50%| |Oddish | 50%| 50%| |Paras | 50%| 50%| |Venonat | 50%| 50%| |Diglett | 50%| 50%| |Meowth | 50%| 50%| |Psyduck | 50%| 50%| |Mankey | 50%| 50%| |Growlithe | 75%| 25%| |Poliwag | 50%| 50%| |Abra | 75%| 25%| |Machop | 75%| 25%| |Bellsprout | 50%| 50%| |Tentacool | 50%| 50%| |Geodude | 50%| 50%| |Ponyta | 50%| 50%| |Slowpoke | 50%| 50%| |Magnemite |GENDERLESS-----| |Farfetch'd | 50%| 50%| |Doduo | 50%| 50%| |Seel | 50%| 50%| |Grimer | 50%| 50%| |Shellder | 50%| 50%| |Gastly | 50%| 50%| |Onix | 50%| 50%| |Drowzee | 50%| 50%| |Krabby | 50%| 50%| |Voltorb |GENDERLESS-----| |Exeggcute | 50%| 50%| |Cubone | 50%| 50%| |Lickitung | 50%| 50%| |Koffing | 50%| 50%| |Rhyhorn | 50%| 50%| |Chansey | 0%| 100%| |Tangela | 50%| 50%| |Kangaskhan | 0%| 100%| |Horsea | 50%| 50%| |Goldeen | 50%| 50%| |Staryu |GENDERLESS-----| |Mr. Mime | 50%| 50%| |Scyther | 50%| 50%| |Pinsir | 50%| 50%| |Tauros | 100%| 0%| |Magikarp | 50%| 50%| |Lapras | 50%| 50%| |Eevee | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Porygon |GENDERLESS-----| |Omanyte | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Kabuto | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Aerodactyl | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Snorlax | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Dratini | 50%| 50%| |Chikorita | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Cyndaquil | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Totodile | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Sentret | 50%| 50%| |Hoothoot | 50%| 50%| |Ledyba | 50%| 50%| |Spinarak | 50%| 50%| |Chinchou | 50%| 50%| |Pichu (Baby) | 50%| 50%| |Cleffa (Baby) | 25%| 75%| |Igglybuff (Baby)| 25%| 75%| |Togepi (Baby) | 87.5%| 12.5%| |Natu | 50%| 50%| |Mareep | 50%| 50%| |Marill | 50%| 50%| |Sudowoodo | 50%| 50%| |Hoppip | 50%| 50%| |Aipom | 50%| 50%| |Sunkern | 50%| 50%| |Yanma | 50%| 50%| |Wooper | 50%| 50%| |Murkrow | 50%| 50%| |Misdreavus | 50%| 50%| |Wobbuffet | 50%| 50%| |Girafarig | 50%| 50%| |Pineco | 50%| 50%| |Dunsparce | 50%| 50%| |Gligar | 50%| 50%| |Snubbull | 25%| 75%| |Qwilfish | 50%| 50%| |Shuckle | 50%| 50%| |Heracross | 50%| 50%| |Sneasel | 50%| 50%| |Teddiursa | 50%| 50%| |Slugma | 50%| 50%| |Swinub | 50%| 50%| |Corsola | 25%| 75%| |Remoraid | 50%| 50%| |Delibird | 50%| 50%| |Mantine | 50%| 50%| |Skarmory | 50%| 50%| |Houndour | 50%| 50%| |Phanpy | 50%| 50%| |Stantler | 50%| 50%| |Smeargle | 50%| 50%| |Tyrogue (Baby) | 100%| 0%| |Smoochum (Baby) | 0%| 100%| |Elekid (Baby) | 75%| 25%| |Magby (Baby) | 75%| 25%| |Miltank | 0%| 100%| |Larvitar | 50%| 50%| -----------------------------CHAIN BREEDING----------------------------- So you say "Breeding is easy". You can breed Crunch Growlithes and Drill Peck Skarmorys with ease. They only involve one breeding. Then, for some reason, you decide you want Flail on that brand new Pinsir. We can't directly breed it through even TWO breedings. We have to do something called "chain breeding". All chain breeding is is passing down an attack through multiple breedings until it reaches the desired target. Let's take our Flailing Pinsir problem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here I am with a Pinsir. I want Flail. However, no one that he can breed with naturally learns Flail. However, we happen to notice Paras can get Flail. Problem is, no one that learns the move naturally can breed with Paras. This chain will eventually go all the way back to Magikarp. Yes, Magikarp. Through multiple breedings, we can get Flail from Magikarp to Pinsir. How? Let's look at a few things: Magikarp can breed with Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Ekans, Arbok, Horsea, Seadra, Goldeen, Seaking, Magikarp, Gyarados, Ditto, Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite, Chinchou, Lanturn, Qwilfish, Remoraid, Octillery, and Kingdra. Of these, Horsea can be bred it, and Chinchou and Goldeen (and their evolutions) can get it naturally. We'll choose Horsea for this. Horsea can breed with Charmander, Charmeleon, Chairzard, Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise, Ekans, Arbok, Psyduck, Golduck, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Seel, Dewgong, Horsea, Seadra, Magikarp, Gyarados, Lapras, Ditto, Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, Kabutops, Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite, Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Marill, Azumarill, Politoed, Wooper, Quagsire, Slowking, Corsola, Remoraid, Octillery, Delibird, Mantine, and Kingdra. Of these, Squirtle and Horsea (obviously) can be bred it. We'll have to use Squirtle, otherwise we'll have Horseas passing it on to each other forever ^_~ Squirtle can breed with Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Squirtle, Wartorle, Blastoise, Nidoran F, Nidoran M, Nidorino, Nidoking, Psyduck, Golduck, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Seel, Dewgong, Cubone, Marowak, Lickitung, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Kangaskhan, Horsea, Seadra, Lapras, Ditto, Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, Kabutops, Snorlax, Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite, Chikorita, Bayleef, Meganium, Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Mareep, Flaaffy, Ampharos, Marill, Azumarill, Politoed, Wooper, Quagsire, Slowking, Corsola, Remoraid, Octillery, Delibird, Mantine, Kingdra, Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar Of these, Squirtle (obviously), Horsea (obviously), and Chikorita can be bred it. Since we've already used Squirtle and Horsea, we'll have to breed it to Chikorita. Chikorita can breed with Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Squirtle, Wartorle, Blastoise, Nidoran F, Nidoran M, Nidorino, Nidoking, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Cubone, Marowak, Lickitung, Rhyhorn, Rhydon, Tangela, Kangaskhan, Lapras, Ditto, Snorlax, Chikorita, Bayleef, Meganium, Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Mareep, Flaaffy, Ampharos, Bellossom, Hoppip, Skiploom, Jumpluff, Sunkern, Sunflora, Slowking, Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar Of these, Squirtle (obviously), Paras, Tangela, and Chikorita (obviously) can be bred it. We'll pick Paras for the sake of this example. Paras can breed with Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebel, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Tangela, Scyther, Pinsir, Ditto, Chikorita, Bayleef, Meganium, Ledyba, Ledian, Spinarak, Ariados, Bellossom, Hoppip, Skiploom, Jumpluff, Sunkern, Sunflora, Yanma, Pineco, Forretress, Gligar, Scizor, Shuckle, Heracross BREAKTHROUGH! Pinsir and Paras can breed! Once Paras passes it on to Pinsir, it's over! For a quick review of the chain: We went Magikarp--->Horsea--->Squirtle--->Chikorita--->Paras--->Pinsir. And since Pokemon have to be male to pass moves, the whole chart comes out to: Magikarp (M) (Flail) \ |---Horsea (M) (Flail) / \ Horsea (F) |---Squirtle (M) (Flail) / \ Squirtle (F) |---Chikorita (M) (Flail) / \ Chikorita (F) |---Paras (M) (Flail) / \ Paras (F) |---Pinsir (M) / (Flail) Pinsir (F) Not all chain breedings are this long, but you get the idea... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I think that about sums it up. You will not use chain breeding much. Any Pokemon that can breed with Smeargle can bypass chain breeding easily. This is only for when you actually need it. Enjoy! ^_^ P.S. You'd better enjoy it ^_~ (j/k =P) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Part XII: Pokemon Type Chart =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- N F W E G I F P Gr Fl Pc B R G D Dk S -------------------------------------------------------- Normal |________________________________________-__=_________- Fire |____-__-_____+__________________________-_____-______+ Water |____+________-___________+______________+_____-________ Electric |_______+__-__-___________=____+_______________-________ Grass |____-__+_____-________-__+____-______-__+_____-______-_ Ice |____-__-_____+___________+____+_________+_____+________ Fighting |+____________+__+____________ -__-___-__+________ +____ Poison |_____________+________-__-______________-__-__________= Ground |___+_____+___-________+______=__________+_____________+ Flying |_________-_____ -__+________________+___-_____________- Psychic |___________________+_+__________-________________=____- Bug |___-_____+______-_ -_____-_____ +_____________________- Rock |______________________________________________________- Ghost |______________________________________________________- Dragon |______________________________________________________- Dark |______________________________________________________- Steel |______________________________________________________- ----------------- Legend ----------------- +: Mutiply by 2 | -: Mutiply by 0.5| =: Mutiply by | nothing ------------------ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Part XIII: Credits =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- CJayC: For posting this FAQ on his website CJayC: And for his comprehensive how-to-write guide that can be found here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/contribute/howtowrite.html Nintendo Power: For some of the information in this FAQ NickWhiz1: For the WHOLE Pokemon Daycare section. A lot of people send me hate mail after I fail to reply to their so-called "important" letter. The truth is, I determine whethere your letter is an important one or not. I get a lot of email everyday, and I don't have the time (nor the patience) to answer each of the everylast 26 emails I get. However, questions mentioned in the FAQ will NOT be answered. So, before sending in your email, make sure it's not mentioned in the FAQ, alright? With the disclaimer taken care of, here are the methods how you can contact me through.
