Thousand Arms has some very innovative concepts like dating system, forging and so on. In this guide, it will focus on the basic knowledges that i think you need to know about Thousand Arms. Of course, if you want a complete faq guide, refer to Dan Simpson 's Thousand Arms walkthrough/faq. He has done a great job and remember to change the font size to 9 for his faq or you will have a problem of viewing his faq. Lastly, i am not going to write a walkthrough on Thousand Arms. I completed the game about a month ago in December'1999. And, i am not going to replay the whole thing right from the start just to write a walkthrough. Yeah, the faq is rather long-winded again...Basically, the explanation is rather long. And, i split everything into different paragraphs. Each paragraph often deals with a new concept in the game or my personal comment about the game. Anyway, hope you enjoy reading it and do spent some time reading through this faq before you start playing the game. Feel free to comment anything and if there is any mistakes or anything which you will like to contribute, feel free to notify me by contacting me at . Next Update Finally, the faq is finished! All the sections have finally been completed after weeks of typing! A sad news to all Thousand Arms fans. I will no longer update this faq anymore. Avoid sending any more information, tips, hints to me. The reason is if you do this, this will only tempt me to update this faq. I have covered everything I know about Thousand Arms. If you want a good walkthrough for the game, I strongly recommend you to read Dan Simpson's Thousand Arms walkthrough, which can be found in gamefaqs too. And, one more thing, since I will no longer update this faq, some of the questions found in the frequently-asked-questions may be outdated and may be no longer relevant. But, I am going to leave it intact as it is. Lastly, enjoy your copy of Thousand Arms. So, goodbye, everyone!!! With many anticipated RPGs released in 1999 like Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy Anthology, Suikoden II and Grandia, some may say that Thousand Arms is an underdog. Well, it isn't actually, at least in my own opinion. Thousand Arms utilises extensive animation cutscenes and at least 12 hours of voices, both of which are very well done. The animation custcenes segue seamlessly from the in-game proceedings. Characters are very well-animated, and look quite deformed. And, the enviroment is 3-D polygonals, allowing massive exploration. I have to admit that the graphics are really very good and are much better than most RPGs, but graphics alone are not the only reasons for me to purchase Thousand Arms. I am a demanding person and expects a lot from a game. So, how did this game from Atlus impress me? The first is, of course the story. The story is not that complex like Xenogears and is quite a typical setting of most traditional RPGs. Light V.S Dark...and the hero must destroy the evil. But, what really impress me is the character development. Why must a blacksmith date a girl in order to forge a stronger weapon? Sounds weird but very interesting! And, because of that, there's a dating stimulation, the first for any RPGs. I know that there are certain people complaining that most of the questions ask in a date are repeated and that's what makes the dating system a failure. I do agree for some reasons but that doesn't make me hate it. I love to mess up dates, and watch how the girls react, their expressions, how they look like when they are angry, sad, happy, or jealous. Furthermore, the extensive use of voices make the characters more alive. Lastly, the plot is quite easy to follow and at least, you do not need to scratch your head and figure out what will be happening next like Xenogears. Talk about mini-games and there are quite a lot! You can even find a Print Club Machine in a town that allows you to take pictures with a girl and you can select your favourite frames. [Did anyone mention anything about Neo Print?] I was quite impressed with some little features that Atlus added in Thousand Arms. The first feature is that it supports analog controller and vibration function, which Xenogears don't have. Secondly, you can open a map anytime in town, or overworld [Other than Dungeons!] by pressing the Triangle button. This makes navigation more easier than Xenogears. I know Square added a compass in Xenogears but...a map shows everything! At least, i don't get lost that much in Thousand Arms than Xenogears. Thirdly, whenever you are near a door, a door icon will pop out, so you know that there is actually an entrance. Fourly, you can pause anytime in the game, just in case something crops up unexpectedly. Very considerate, right? I like the idea of forging a weapon to learn a magic spell or special. Quite innovative! The one-on-one combat system is something quite new, though i really don't like it that much. It allows very little flexibility for strategies and the backline characters usually have very little involvement during combats other than doing a few taunts or cheers. Other than that, i really don't have any complains. Of course, talk about combat system, Final Fantasy is better! In terms of music, i have to admit that Xenogears, Suikoden II, Final Fantasy series win. Face it, Atlus don't have a talented musician like Nobuo Uematsu or Yasunori Mitsuda. Most of the tunes weren't able to capture your hearts, and were pretty average. But, considering that Atlus made the effort to hire a Japanese pop artist, Ayumi Hamasaki to sing the opening and ending theme, Atlus really needed to be praised. For your information, the opening theme is called 'Depend On You' and the ending theme is called 'Two of Us.' Both songs are really nice and i found myself liking 'Depend On You' more than 'Eyes On Me.' Overall, Thousand Arms is still a great game. So, after reading all my craps, what is your opinion of Thousand Arms? So, are you going to get the game now or you already have it? ======================================================================= II)Characters ======================================================================= Below shows the profiles of most of the characters you will meet along your journey. There are a total of 7 main characters which you can control to fight enemies. Now, enjoy reading! Warning:Some of the characters' descriptions etc are quite a spoiler. Avoid reading them if you don't want me to ruin your surprises!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- II.I)Main Party ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The profiles of the 7 main characters are listed below: Meis Triumph ================ Age :16. Gender :Male. Weapon :M.Sword. Ambition :To be a great Spirit Blacksmith like Jyabil. Fav. Hobby :To have a set of beautiful girls worldwide. [I suppose so, too!] Origin :Kant, a town in the countryside of Tradguld. Description :One word to describe the Triumph, 'philander.' Like father, like son, Meis Triumph flirts with almost every woman he comes across. Born in a family of a noble spirit blacksmith, he has to train himself hard to become a great blacksmith. The Triumph family owns the land of Kant until the Dark Acolytes arrives and take over all their every possession. Lost and exhausted, Meis makes his way to the town of Boyzby and the journey unfolds. You may think that Meis's habit of womanising will eventually get him into trouble one day. Well, what do you think? In my opinion, Meis Triumph possesses great leadership qualities and he cares a great deal about his friends. A loyal friend, indeed! [Anyway, i wonder who gave him the name, 'Meis', which is pronounced much like 'Mice'. Don't you think so?] Sodina Dawnfried ================ Age :15. Gender :Female. Weapon :S.Knife. Ambition :To help Meis Triumph to become a great spirit Blacksmith and protect the Sacred Altar to fulfill his brother, Jyabil's wish. Fav. Food :Italian Food, especially Ravioli. Best Gifts :Any Brooch, Gold Bell, Music Box, Potted Plant, and Any Amulet. Origin :Boyzby, a town south of Kant. Description :A beautiful and charming girl. She lost her parents at a young age and since young, she and her brother, Jyabil had to depend on each other. She developed an unnatural attachment to her brother. The death of her brother prove to be a blow to her and she swore to help Meis Triumph to become a great blacksmith and protects the Sacred Altar. For some reasons, she seems to have some feelings for Meis Triumph and show it by being jealous. Muza Grifford ================ Age :21. Gender :Male. Weapon :Claymore. Ambition :To become a fearless warrior. [But, first, i guess he needs to train himself not to be afraid of girls, especially Wyna Grapple. Haha!] Origin :Schutzren, home of fearless warriors. Description :Back in the Triumph family, you heard of how charming, how gentlemanly Muza Grifford, the warrior is from the ladies and maids. But, the REAL MUZA turns out to be a complete letdown and a totally different person from what he is being described by the ladies and maids in the Triumph family. He is a fearless warrior but when it comes to woman, he is totally harmless. A shy man who dares not fight a woman. He falls in love with Wyna Grapple at first sight but dare not express his feelings to her. [Oh no, He is freezing again! Wyna..you better go away first!] Wyna Grapple ================ Age :17. Gender :Female. Weapon :Hammer. Ambition :To lead a carefree life and freedom is not curbed by anyone else. Fav. Food :Spicy Food. [Mine's too, especially Curry.] Best Gifts :Dumbbell Set, Leopard Bag and Sweatband. Origin :Langoud, the pirate's base. Description :A strong, wilful, easy-going, and unwomanly girl. She is adventurous, and believes in leading her own life style, instead of being controlled by others. Because of that, she often has quarrels with her father. She acted like as man as she tried to be strong and because of that, her father feared that no man would want her. Cast her personality aside first, she is actually a gorgeous and charming woman. By far the sexiest woman in the game. [She wears a Bikini! Hey, come on!] Born to be a pirate, she and her father lives inside the Langoud, the main base area for the pirates. Soushi Mahoroba ================ Age :18. Gender :Male. Weapon :Katana. Ambition :Protects the people of Wano from the intruders, Dark Acolytes and saves Master Kanouha. Origin :Wano, the destroyed land of the Orient. Description :My first impression of him reminds me of a Japanese summurai, Sasaki Kojiro. Anyway, never mind, if you don't know who Kojiro is. Soushi is a Ninja with very strong fighting spirits. In order to save his Master Kanouha, he has no choice but to use a Dark Sword to increase his fighting skills. However, the dark sword has side effects too as it gradually drains Soushi's will and power. Soushi, on the other hand, do have some similar personalities like Meis Triumph. Both like to flirt but I think Meis Triumph seems to be slighly better than him. On the other hand, Soushi looks more sincere than Meis Triumph when it comes to courting girls. Kyleen Nelphe ================ Age :16. Gender :Female. Weapon :Rapier. Ambition :To wish that Sharan will be like the past again. She hopes to get rid of Lavantis. Fav. Food :??? [I suppose anything as long as it is expensive.] Best Gifts :Any Cosmetics, any Expensive Jewelry, Fanny Pack, Money Tree, and Yellow Purse. Origin :Sharan, the legendary floating city. Description :A materialistic woman, who believes that wealth is the most important thing in life. No money, no talk! Her family used to rule Sharan but because of the Lavantis, she has lost all her wealths, possessions and even her family. Things are sold at a high price in Sharan, and people are becoming selfish and only money works. As a result, Kyleen develops a mindset of believing that money is everything in her life. Now, how is the party going to show her that money is not everything, but love? Nelsha Stylus ================ Age :12. [I am not sure about her exact age.] Gender :Female. Weapon :Needle. Ambition :To be a famous dress master. Fav. Food :Sushi. Best Gifts :Bear Costume, Sewing Kit and Teddy Bear. Origin :Myscatonia, the Ancient City. Description :Naturally, she's rather timid and weird and wears a spectacle. Her aspiration is to become a dress master. As expected, she has lots of outfits for herself. So, guess what are the effects of these wearing these outfits? Multi-personalities...? Each outfit gives a wearer different personalities. It affects the mood, behaviour, mind etc of a wearer. And, because of that, it's rather hard to predict what the wearer will do next. [Sounds dangerous, right? Indeed too! Or just confused?] When Nelsha is back to usual self, she can be quite childish at times. Credit:Thanks to Dan Simpson . Some of the information listed here like the characters' age, origins were taken from his faq. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- II.II)Others ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Below shows a list of characters whom you will meet along the way on your journey. Master Cliff ================ Gender :Male. Fav. Hobby :To have a set of beautiful girls worldwide. [I suppose so, too!] Origin :Kant, a town in the countryside of Tradguld. Description :The owner of Kant and the 6th generation family member of the Triumph family. He is Mei's dad and like father, like son, both of them are a womaniser. The Triumph family is a class of noble blacksmith and Master Cliff is of course, not an exception as well. To say that he dates a girl to forge a stronger weapon, it's better to say that he is womanising again! And, no suprised at all, because of genes, Meis inherited his ^. I guess you know what i mean! Jyabil ================ Gender :Male. Origin :Boyzby, a town south of Kant. Description :A famous spirit blacksmith in Boyzby and Sodina's brother. Unlike the Triumph family, he does not need to flirt around to make a stronger weapon. A charming man as many women in the town are crazy of him. A mystery man, i will say! What's his relationship with Metalia? Why do he know so much about the Sacred Altar? Who is his teacher? Why did Jyabil has the ability to summon an elemental beast? What is the secret of the hammer he is holding? You find it out yourself. [I'll not reveal anything!] Schmit [Dark Master] ================ Gender :Male. Origin :??? And, as a result, he was being manipulated by the Emperor, and became the Dark Master, serving the empire. Grapple ================ Gender :Male. Wish :Hopes that Wyna will get marry soon! Origin :Langoud, the pirate's base. Description :The leader of the pirates and Wyna's father. He seems to enjoy life a lot as he indulges in drinking and woman. Note:Each photo costs 300 CG, which is rather quite expensive in the beginning. Take a photo with the girl when she's in a good mood. Note:You will notice that every print club machine will have these two frames, one with two swords, and another one with a 'love' symbol with the word, 'Thousand Arms.' Each print club machine has a total of 4 frames and two of them are mentioned above. The remaining two are new ones. This is quite fun, considering that the last two frames are different depending on which the pictures are taken from. [Trademark frames..., huh?] Note:I wonder if these print club machines remind you of something else? Yes... Like NeoPrint, right? ======================================================================= V)Combat ======================================================================= Thousand Arms retains some traditional fundamentals like HP, Elemental Beast, Special attacks and so on etc, while modifying and introducing some innovative concepts. Thousand Arms introduces a frontline and backline concept and combat system involves mainly one on one, involving the frontline character and enemy while the backline does all the assisting work. Well, are the concepts good or bad? Along the way, i will list some of the good points and the bad points about each and every aspect of the concepts. So, whether you agree or not, it's just my personal view towards the game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V.I)HP ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I guess i do not need to explain anymore about HP. It's a tradition that almost or all of the RPGs cannot get rid of this system. HP, known as Hit Point sometimes, is widely used in all or most RPGs. Once Hit Point reaches zero, your character is K.O, meaning he or she is dead unless you revive him or her. As you gain levels, your HP will rise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V.II)EP ----------------------------------------------------------------------- [Does EP stand for Elemental Power..?] Anyway, whatever it is called, most RPGs still can't get rid of using magic points. [Final Fantasy VIII is an ultimate exception with the introducing of draw system.] To cast a magic spell, it requires some EP. Once a spell is casted, you will lose some EP. If EP is not enough, you cannot cast that particular spell. So, when EP reaches zero, you cannot cast anymore spells. Simple, as that! As you gain levels, your EP will rise. Simple enough, EP works like MP in most traditional RPGs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V.III)MP ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MP is basically Elemental Spirit and there are two ways of obtaining MP either by: a)Earn by winning battles. b)Search for Elemental Spirit(s), mainly in towns. As for (a), i don't think i need to explain much. Now, move on to (b). Elemental Spirit(s), in my opinion, are quite tricky to find. Why do i say that? [Hmm...what do you think???] In the World of Thousand Arms, all things, regardless it is living or non-living has spirits in it. And, the ultimate goal of a Spirit Blacksmith is to train himself to be able to communicate with the spirits. So, where can spirits be found? Yes... in houses, or almost everywhere in towns, except in dungeons, caves etc. [I haven't encountered finding one elemental spirit in a cave before.] Spirits can be found almost everywhere, even in swords, cauldron, mailbox and so on. When you come to a new town, be sure to explore the houses and find all the elemental spirits. So, what's the ultimate spirits? I believe it's the elemental spirit. The powerful of all spirits..i suppose..? The road to becoming a good spirit blacksmith is not easy...[Did anyone mention about the Holy Flames?] Having said so much about elemental spirit, i haven't explained why there is a need to search or gain more elemental spirits. The reason is very simple! You need it for dating, forging, learning new specials and so on. [Refer to the various sections for more details.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V.IV)Frontline and Backline ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Thousand Arms incorporates an one-on-one battle system, with the frontline character does all the attacking and one or two backline character(s) do(es) assisting the frontline. So, you can have a maximum of 3 party members fighting in a battle. Remember in Final Fantasy series? You can switch characters between front and back row? The concept is quite similar but different. You can choose one frontline character and a maximum of two backline characters. It's best to put a character with strong attacks like Meis, Muza etc in frontline while the rest, mainly the girls at the backline, and assist the frontline character. The frontline character can use of the commands that he or she has, such as Attack, Elemental Beast [For Meis only] / Special [For the rest, except Meis], Defend, Spell, Retreat, Change and so on. The backline characters, however can use only commands like Spell, Standby and Retreat. Take note that the backline characters can only cast certain spells like curative etc, but not any attacking spells like fire+, Wind+ and so on. The same concept applies to monsters as well. How this combat system works is pretty simple. Okay, when it's the frontline or backline's turn, choose a command. For example, i choose a fight command for the frontline. Now, look at the top right corner of the screen. You will notice a set of Triangles, one at the top for the frontline, indicated by a word, 'Front' and one below it, indicated by a word, 'Back'. To the right of the word, 'Front', you should see the word, 'Attack'. This indicates that the frontline is about to use the attack command. The triangles will start to turn darker from right to left and once all the Triangles turn dark, you should see a X instead. Now, press X and the frontline character will perform a normal attack. How fast the set of Triangles turn darker depend on the character's agility. The faster your agility is, the faster the set of Triangles will turn darker and it will mean that you get to execute action more faster. Lastly, to switch characters, all you need is to adjust the position at the party option. You can put a total of 3 characters in the left. F means frontline and you put the character that you want it to be in the frontline at the top. The two characters below are backline characters, indicated by a B, which means backline. To swop characters during battle, all you need is to select 'NEXT CHAR command. When the set of Triangles turn darker, press to perform an action and the the second character, which is the first backline character will swop with the frontline character. However, the frontline character will not reappear again in the battle anymore until the battle ends. Summary ======= a)Choose a command for the frontline and backline. b)Wait for the Triangles to turn darker from right to left. c)Press X for the frontline character to perform the selected command and Circle for the backline character to perform the selected command. ======================================================================= Note:If you happen to choose a wrong command, press Square to cancel the frontline action and Triangle to cancel the backline action. Tips:You may not want to use the action immediately. For example, let the backline uses a cure spell on a frontline character. However, the frontline character still has a very relatively high HP so it's not worthwhile to cast Cure spell now. Just wait and do not press Circle. And, when the frontline is at lower HP now, cast Cure spell on him to recover him. Of course, this is just an example only. ======================================================================= Standby ======= When backline uses the standby command, he or she will perform either taunts or cheers occasionally. [Refer to the taunts/cheers section for more informations.] Comment ======= The frontline and backline combat is rather innovative but somehow, the backline characters have very little participation during combat. Secondly, it allows very little flexibility to come out with new strategies. Nevertheless, Atlus deserved a clap for coming out with such a innovative combat system. Of course, some may like one-on-one combat while some may not. It's a matter of preference. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V.V)Elemental Beast ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Are you confused with the word, 'Elemental Beast'? Be..Beast..? Simple enough, i just make my personal comment. You may just agree or do not agree. Think of it as summoned creature used in Final Fantasy series, or simply Guardian Forces but without any HP, exp etc. In my opinion, the Elemental Beasts are by far the most devastating attacks that you will find in the game. So, anything new about elemental beasts? First, don't worry about whether you can find all the elemental beasts. As the story unfolds, you will definitely find them all. [Unlike Final Fantasy VIII where you can forget to draw sometimes..] Yeah, you may think i am talking crap again. Perhaps, an encouragement..? Okay. This is the real stuff now. How many times you can summon a Elemental Beast is limited. You don't use EP to summon. And, that's something quite new, i will say. Now, as i have mentioned, Meis is a spirit blacksmith and therefore, he can communciate with the spirits. And, throughout the game, he's the only one who can summon an elemental beast. What's the downside? Yeah, unlike others, he does not have a special attack. Okay! Anytime when you are at the status screen or during combat period, just click on the elemental spirit option and you probably see a certain number next to the respective elemental beast. The number actually represents how many times you can summon that elemental beast. For example, if the number is 2, that means you can summon that elemental beast for two times. ======================================================================= Qns:How do i increase the number of times i summon an elemental beast? Ans:Hmm..i believe it's the same thing as special. This is what i believe and it may be wrong since it doesn't mention anything about it in any other faq. Read below: I strongly believe that to increase the number of times of summon or specials, a)You need to summon the elemental beasts or use the specials. [at least once?] b)Increase your levels. For example, initially, i can summon Aquoon for just one time. But, after gaining a few levels, i realise i can summon it for two times actually. Of course, this can be wrong too but that's what i believe in it now! I may be wrong and i'm hoping for someone to correct me. ======================================================================= Qns:So, when i have used up all the summons, what can i do so that i can summon the elemental beasts again? Ans:The concept is the same as using specials. You must regain all of your HP and EP either through sleeping in an inn [Yeah, sleep, right?], or fully heal by Benly Brothers or Big Monoliths etc. And, don't worry if you are confused about who's or what's Benly Brothers or Monolths. Why? You will know it by the time comes. So, after you have fully regained your HP and EP, you should be able to summon the elemental beasts or use special attacks. ======================================================================= Summon List-Contributed By Dan Simpson =========== The elemental beast list below is taken from Dan Simpson 's faq/walkthrough. Be sure to take a look at his excellent faq. Many thanks to him as well. There are a total of 7 elemental beasts in the World of Thousand Arms and each elemental beast possess different elemental power. The list below shows the elemental power, description of attacks of the elemental beast and the location of getting the elemental beast. ____________________________________________________________________ |Name |Elemental Power |Description of Attacks |Location | |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Aquoon |Water Elemental |Whirlpool Attack. |Lucent | | | | |Cave. | |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Fiednod |Earth Elemental |Casts sleep, then slashes. |Wano. | |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Flareniel |Fire Elemental |Burns all with flame. |Rockbit. | |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Raou |Wind Elemental |Rips apart all enemies. |Death | | | | |Crimson | |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Golda |Light Elemental |Disintegrates w/ golden |Myscatonia| |__________|________________|_____________________________|__________| |Odnis |? However, unlike Meis, they cannot summon an elemental beast. The concept is the simiarly to Elemental Beast. There's a number right of each special and each number indicates how many times you can use that special. Yeah..someone's complaining i am talking crap again. Okay..the concepts are similar. So, do read up the two questions at the elemental beast section, which is just above. Take note that each character can learn up to a maximum of 4 special attacks, other than Meis Triumph and Nelsha Stylus. Meis Triumph is the only character who cannot use special attack but can use Elemental Beast. As for Nelsha Stylus, her various outfits are her special attacks and there are a total of 7 outfits for her. [If you want to know more about Mei Triumph's Elemental Beast, please refer to the section above.] So, how do you learn new special? I'll summarise it in short! If you want more informations, refer to the Dating and Forging section. First, raise intimacy level with a particular girl either by making dates, giving presents or play mini-games. Make sure your charisma is as high or greater than the intimacy level. Next, simply forge your weapon with that girl [The girl which you just increase your intimacy level with her.] So, as you forge, occasionally, you will learn new specials or new magic spells. ======================================================================= Note:Unlike the rest, Nelsha does not learn new specials by increasing intimacy levels. [Of course, magics still do.] Nelsha's dream is to become a dressmaster. Basically, she has lots of dresses or outfits. Depending on which outfit she wears, different outfits give her different kind of attacks. Don't worry too much!!! Nelsha will have her Disco Dancer outfit in the beginning and for the rest, except School Girl, you need to search for them which are hidden inside treasure chest. To get School Girl, you need to find Rags and then forge it in any Sacred Altar. Come back after about 10 hours or more and you will notice that Rags has changed into School Girl. [Refer to the forging section for more details about the locations of various Nelsha's outfits and Rusty Weapons.] ======================================================================= Special ======= Below is a list of descriptions of special attacks. Note that all the descriptions are taken directly from the game. Included in the most right column is how you can learn this special attack. For example, to learn Sodina's Dancing Knife, the word, Sodina and [Lv 1] indicate that you need to forge your weapon when Sodina's Intimacy level with you is at level 1. And, initial means that when you first get him or her, he or she has already learnt that particular special attack. Unlike most traditional RPGs, you do not learn new magics as your characters' levels rise. Instead, you need to raise intimacy levels with girls and when you forge a weapon, you will learn some new spells or specials. [Refer to the dating section or forging section for more information.] Spell List-Contributed By Dan Simpson ========== The spell list listed below is taken from Dan Simpson 's faq/Walkthrough. It's by far one of the few games that has an RPG/Dating Simulation, if not the first. The dating system is obviously much cooler than Azure Dreams. You can start dating a girl once you have become Jyabil's apprentice by taking Mineral from the ruins to him. To date, go to the Goddess Statue found in every town and village, talk to the Goddess Statue, and you will be asked to choose a date, play a mini-game or give presents to a particular girl. Whether it is a date, playing a mini-game, or giving a present, it costs MP and if the girl is in a foul mood [As indicated by a heart], MP required is higher. The higher her intimacy level is with Meis, the more MP is required. ======================================================================= Note:Hmm... I am not sure how you can determine the mood of the girls. The heart indicates the mood of the girls. This is what i think. Remember each girl has her own best dating spots? I suppose if she like or don't like a particular place, this may affect her mood. However, i have e-mailed Dan Simpson, regarding this question. He replies to me saying that he thinks the mood occurs randomly. That means, the girl can be happy, sad, angry etc sometimes and that you can't determine a girl's mood. ======================================================================= Choose date and take the girl to a dating spot. When you reach a dating spot, you will be prompted whether you want to date here or not. Note that you can't date anywhere you like in a town or village and there are specific spots ideal for dating. Choose yes and your date with your dream girl begins. Of course, a date can't be of called a date without any conversation. The girl will ask you many questions and you will be given two options to choose. Depending on how you choose, you can make the girl happy or angry. If she is happy, she might give you a kiss, if not, she may leave anytime. If you want to know what the options are, you can refer to Dan Simpson 's Thousand Arms walkthrough faq. Sometimes, a question can get so weird that both choices that are offered can make the girl angry. Anyway, do not worry! It's sometimes quite fun to mess up a date. And, i do mean it! There are a total of 9 girls which you can date and like what Dan Simpson said, they can be divided into Party Girls and Town Girls. Party Girls are those who will fight together with you in your party like Sodina, Wyna and so on. Town Girls will not fight together with you and there are steps to follow to find them. ________________________________ |Party Girls |Elemental(s) | |__________________|_____________| |Sodina Dawnfried |Light | |__________________|_____________| Party Girls will be |Wyna Grapple |Fire | available once they |__________________|_____________| have joined your party. |Kyleen Nelphe |Wind | Look below to see the |__________________|_____________| difference between |Nelsha Stylus |Earth | Party and Town Girls. |__________________|_____________| __________________________________________________________________ |Town Girls |Elemental(s) |Location(s) |How??? | |_______________|_____________|____________|_______________________| |Marion |Wind |Mounthand |After fixing Langoud, | | | | |talk to her in her | | | | |laboratory. | |_______________|_____________|____________|_______________________| |Palma |Water |Langoud |Talk to the priest in | | | | |the far right of the | | | | |Reactor Room. Okay, find the town girls. You can only date with specific town girls at specific towns. What do i mean? Look at the locations like Boyzby, Kant etc and you can find one Goddess Statue in this area. For example, to date with Kyoka, you can only go to Boyzby, and no other towns; Marion can only be dated in Mounthand and no other towns and so on. But, for party girls, you can date them in any towns, as long as there is a Goddess Statue. Get that? ======================================================================= VII)Forging ======================================================================= Known as the Meister system sometimes, the forging system does away with the traditional system of powering up weapons and gaining special abilities. So, what does this mean? The Meister system, in my opinion, is closely related to the dating system. Forging simply means make your weapons stronger. Unlike most traditional RPGs, you do not buy weapons from weapon shops, neither do you learn new spells or attacks by gaining new levels. As mention, Meis is a spirit blacksmith, and of course, he's the only one that can forge a stronger weapon. And, to do that, you need elemental power from the girls. Sounds strange, huh? The higher your intimacy level is with a particular girl is, the stronger her elemental power is when you forge a weapon. ======================================================================= Qns:So, how do you raise intimacy level? Ans:Simply go to the Goddess Statue, and you can choose to date, play mini-games or give a gift with or to a particular girl. To date, simply take the girl to a dating spot. If a date is successful, she will give you a kiss and MOST LIKELY, your intimacy level will rise by 1. [Sometimes, you may need at least 2 kisses.] And note that you need MP to date a girl, give her a gift, or play mini-games with her. The higher the intimacy level is and the worse her mood is [look at the heart!], you will need a higher MP. Of course, don't forget that intimacy level can drop too if the date is a failure. [Refer to the dating system above for more information.] ======================================================================= Now, the level of your weapons depend on the characters' levels. So, if Meis's levels is lv 60, he can forge a lv 60 weapon sword. A higher level will of course require a higher MP. Also, assuming Meis is at level 50 and 55 and your existing weapon is at lv 40. Obviously, to forge a lv 55 weapon, it will require a higher MP than forging a lv 50 weapon. Before you forge a weapon, you will be asked to choose a girl to land her elemental power to you to forge a weapon. Depending on which girl you choose, it brings in different attributes to your weapon. For example, Sodina will give you light attribute to your weapon and Wyna will lend you fire attribute to your weapon and so on. However, if the intimacy level is not changed with that particular girl, you will not learn any new attacks or magic spells. Before that, let me introduce another term called 'Charisma'. [Charm, huh..?] First, go to the status screen and look for Meis. In Mei's status screen, you should be able to notice his Charisma. Both Intimacy level and Charisma range from 1, being the weakest to 10, being the strongest. Intimacy level and Charisma cannot get higher than 10. So, if your intimacy level with a particular girl has reached 10, i suppose you will be smart enough that it's time to stop dating that particular girl since no matter how many times you date, intimacy level can't rise anymore. To increase Charisma, all you need is to increase Mei's levels. [Not weapon level, please!] Sometimes, when a girl gains a new intimacy level with you, you will get a chance to let your characters learn new spells or allow some characters to learn new special attacks. Let me give some examples. When intimacy level with Sodina is at level 1, you will learn Heal [Spell] for everyone and Dancing Knives [Special] for Sodina only. In such case, you can expect more MP to forge a weapon. Assuming that Sodina has learned Heal [spell], Dancing Knives [Special] already, her weapon level is at 50 and her level is at 55, you can now forge a weapon that is at lv 55 for her. Let's take two different cases now, when intimacy level with her is at level 1 and 2 respectively. When your intimacy level with her is at level 2, you can learn Wind [Spell] and Barrier [Spell] when you forge a weapon. Obviously, in case 2, it will take a higher MP to forge a weapon because your characters will learn two new extra spells. However, if Charisma is below intimacy level, you can't let everyone learn Wind [Spell] and Barrier [Spell] for everyone, assuming Meis's Charisma is at level 1, and Sodina's intimacy level with you is at level 2 because Wind and Barrier are Sodina's level 2 spells. Get it? It's best to make intimacy level the same as Charisma level. Remember to forge the weapons first before you gain another intimacy level with the girl. Why? The reason is simple. Assuming you have forgotten to forge a weapon when Sodina is at intimacy level 1 with you. That means that Sodina has not learnt Heal [Spell] and Dancing Knives yet. Now, increase your intimacy level with Sodina to 2. You found out that you can only learn Wind [Spell] and Barrier [Spell]. Hey, what happened to Heal [Spell] and Dancing Knives [Special]? Got it or not? Confused...? I hope everything is clear so far. Just in case, you have missed learning any spells. You can purposely make a date a failure with that particular girl by answering the wrong choice, lose the mini-games and so on. In this way, intimacy level with Sodina will drop from 2 to 1 and your characters will be able to learn Heal [Spell] and Sodina will be able to learn Dancing Knives [Special]. If not, you can give items like Adult Novel, Big Umbrella etc to girls, which will help you to decrease intimacy level(s) with them. I guess even if i keep quiet, you would probably be able to guess what's the 'content' inside Adult Novel. Note:You can forge your weapons at any Smithy or at any Sacred Altar. Meister-Contributed By Dan Simpson ======= The list below is taken from Dan Simpson 's faq/walkthrough. It shows you what special or spell you will learn at different intimacy levels. | |__________|_______________|________________|________________| Rags/Rusty Weapons ================== Throughout the entire game, you will definitely come across tons of Rusty Weapons and Rags. Don't worry too much! As these items have already rusted, they have not lived up to their usefulness. So, the only way is to forge these Rusty weapons in Sacred Altar to turn these weapons into Vintage Weapons. Each Sacred Altar can only forge one Rusty Weapon into Vintage Weapon and it took quite a long time for these weapons to turn into Vintage. Guess how long? At least 10 hours or more. And, there are a total of 6 Rusty Weapons and 1 Rags for you to forge in Sacred Altar. My advice is as soon as you get them, go to the nearest Sacred Altar and forge these weapons. So, is it worthwhile? Like what Desmond Xie , i personally agree with him. Unless you forge these Rusty Weapons early, or it will be of no use. It took over 10 hours and within this time duration, you would probably gain over 15 levels and by that time, your main weapon will be very strong. And, once a Rusty Weapon changes to a Vintage Weapon, you can't forge the Vintage Weapon again to increase its strength. A Vintage Weapon is pretty strong in the beginning but as the game progresses when your characters' levels are all over 60, your main weapons are probably more stronger than Vintage Weapon as you keep on forging your main weapons. So, should i spent the time forging these Rusty Weapons? Of course, you can if you want! It doesn't hurt if you have more stronger weapons, am i right? The only Rusty item which you really must forge is Rags as it changes to School Girl after forging and School Girl is one of the outfits [Special] for Nelsha. Note:Rusty Weapons and Rags can only be fortified in Sacred Altar, and not only other ordinary Smithy. Got that? So, what's the other ways? Yeah, you probably get it. You can save the game at any time at the world map. So, what's the last way? A save point...? Quite right! When you first head to the Ruins to find the mineral, you will encounter a white creature call Damashi. Bingo! So, to save, simply talk to Damashi by pressing the X button in front of him. And, that's all. Isn't it easy? Have you ever wondered about this before? ========================================= On the surface, Damashi appears to be on your side, helping you to save game datas but on the other side, he can sometimes be your enemy. Why? I'll leave you to let you find it out yourself!!! Tips:Be sure to save everytime before you enter a date. ======================================================================= IX)Item List ======================================================================= The list of items listed below are contributed by Dan Simpson 's Thousand Arms faq/walkthrough. All means that all characters can equip this accessory and there are certain accessories that are meant for female users only like Dragon Ring, Evade Ring etc. A + means an increase and a - means a decrease. __________________________________________________________ |Name |Location |Effect |Note | |______________|_________________|________________|________| |Dragon Ring |Rockbit. And, hopefully, you will find this section useful. Now, let's move on! 1)Map ========== -Always press Triangle to open the Map, whether you are in towns or in the Overworld. The Map is like a 'Guardian' to you, always indicating your correct path. As the game takes place on a 3-D polygonal enviroments, the camera view is always shifting and because of that, may adds some confusion and cause you to get lost. 2)Saving ========== -Always save your journey whenever you can because you will not know what is going to happen next. -You can save your journey by talking to a Damashi, which is often found in dungeons etc, talk to the inn owner in a town or in the overworld. -Always save before you forge any weapon or date a girl. 3)Quick Text ========== -If you think that the text is moving too slowly, press Triangle to read all the text at once. 4)Icon(s) ========== -Whenever you are near a door, a door icon will pop up. This is extremely useful when you are in dungeons. -When in towns, dungeons, press L2 and a pointer will pop up, indicating your actual position. This is useful especially when the angle may gets so awkward that it's hard to see your exact position. 5)Walking ========== -By default, when you press the directional-pad, Meis will start to run. Hold Square while pressing the directional-pad to walk instead of run. 6)Quitting ========== -Just in case you want to restart the game, pause the game by pressing Start, then Select, and choose Quit option to restart. 7)Combat ========== -Choose your frontline and backline characters wisely. It is better to have a frontline character who has high HP, high defense and strong physical attack. Recommended characters to be put in frontline are Meis, Muza, Wyna or perhaps Soushi. -Only Meis Triumph has the ability to summon Elemental Beast. However, Meis Triumph does not have any special attack like the rest. -The action button for frontline and backline characters are X and Circle respectively. -To cancel a selected command, press Square for frontline characters and Triangle for backline characters. -Press L1 and R1 to shift camera view to the left and right respectively. This works only when the select command screen appears. -First, select a command you want. Wait for the set of Triangles to turn darker from right to left. Now, press the action button , depending on whether the character is in frontline or backline to activate the command. The same goes to cancelling of command. -Even if the set of Triangles has all turned darker from right to left, the command will not be activated as long as the action button is not pressed. -You can put a maximum of three characters in the battlefield, with one as the frontline and another two in the backline. -When choosing standby for backline characters, they will occasionally perform a taunt or a cheer. 8)Forging ========== -Be sure to search for MP in towns as you need it to forge a weapon. -Forge your weapon whenever you can as this will increase your chance of survival. -As levels gain, you can forge a higher level weapon. -When intimacy level with a girl increases, you can learn new spells or specials by forging a weapon. -Choose a girl wisely when forging a weapon as different girls have different types of elemental power, thus giving different attributes to your weapon. -Whenever you get a rusty item, be it a weapon or rags, be sure to forge it in a Sacred Altar as early as possible. It needs at least 10 hours or more for a Rusty Weapon to turn to a Vintage Weapon. Each Sacred Altar can only forge one Rusty Weapon at a time and note that Rusty items cannot be fortified in any ordinary Smithy. -Rags will turn into School Girl and this is one of the outfits for Nelsha. -While forging a weapon, in case you are tired of hearing the clanking sound of a weapon, press X. 9)Dating ========== -Be sure to save your journey first before you date a girl, send a present or play mini-games. -Try to make Intimacy level in the same level as Charisma level. Charisma level increases as Meis Triumph's level increases. -To decrease Intimacy level, you can either give items like Adult Novel, Umbrella to a girl, answering wrong questions in a date to make her angry, or purposely lose by playing a mini-game with her. That's all that i think you need to know! Enjoy reading! ======================================================================= XI)Song Lyrics- Depend On You ======================================================================= Many people have asked me for the lyrics of 'Depend On You'. 'Depend On you' is a marvellous song sung by the Japanese pop singer, Ayumi Hamasaki. I apologise for giving you guys the song lyrics until so late even though Beno Jange has sent it to me a few months earlier before this last final update. *************************************** Depend on You *************************************** anata ga moshi tabidatsu sono hi ga itsuka kitara soko kara futari de hajimeyou mezashiteta GOORU ni todokisou na toki hontou wa mada tooi koto kizuita no? ittai doko made yukeba ii no ka owari no nai hibi wo dou suru no? zutto tobitsuzukete tsukareta nara hane yasumete ii kara watashi wa koko ni iru yo anata ga moshi tabidatsu sono hi ga itsuka kitara soko kara futari de hajimeyou hitosuji no hikari wo shinjite miru no? soretomo kurayami ni obieru no? zutto tobitsuzuketa tsubasa ga mou habatakezu ni iru nara watashi ga atatameru yo anata no koto hitsuyou to shiteru hito wa kitto kanarazu hitori wa iru kara anata ga hitsuyou to suru hito nara itsumo kitto tonari de waratteiru kara zutto tobitsuzukete tsukareta nara hane yasumete ii kara watashi wa koko ni iru yo itsuka wa mina tabidatsu sono hi ga kitto kuru ne subete wo sutetemo ii hodo kore kara hajimatte yuku futari no monogatari wa fuan to kibou ni michiteru __________________________________________________________________ |Credit|The song lyrics comes from Youko . | | |___________________________________________________________| | |Thanks to Beno Jange for sending | | |the song lyrics provided by Youko to me. | |______|___________________________________________________________| ======================================================================= XII)Frequently-Asked-Question ======================================================================= If you have any questions that you would like to ask me, please read below. You may find your answers to your problems here. More questions will be added to the frequently-asked-question section with each new update of the faq. In future, if you wish to ask any questions, please read through this frequently-asked-question section at least once. From now onwards, i won't entertain anymore questions that can be found here in this section. However, if the questions that you want to ask can be found here and you still cannot solve it, feel free to e-mail me and tell me what your problems are. If you don't describe the problems, then i will not entertain. I hope you can understand that as i want to reduce the number of junk mails that i get almost everyday. One Final Note: =============== If you have any questions, please write an e-mail and send it to my mailbox. Don't take the bother and try to ask me via ICQ because it is likely that i will avoid answering. Of course, chatting is another different matter but that also depends on whether i have the time because i may be occupied with replying e-mails and so on. I found it quite fustrating to answer questions via the ICQ. So to make things easier for me, please send an e-mail instead. Please note that I will not be updating the frequently-asked-questions section anymore. Therefore, some of the questions that are found here may be outdated and no longer be relevant. I apologise for not being able to update the questions regularly. Last Updated:26th March 2001 ======================================================================= 1)How many discs does Thousand Arms has? Two discs. ======================================================================= 2)What is the name of the company who made Thousand Arms? The company behind Thousand Arms is Atlus. Besides making Thousand Arms, Atlus has made quite a lot of strategy-RPG, RPG and non-RPG games like Tail Concerto, Persona Revelations, Brigandine and so on. ======================================================================= 3)You have played and completed Thousand Arms. Can you give a brief idea of what Thousand Arms is like? Okay! As for the storyline, you go and find it out yourself when you play it. The enviroments are 3-D polygonals much like Xenogears. Basically, if you love to explore large 3-D worlds like Xenogears, you are going to love Thousand Arms. Thousand Arms, in my opinion, is a unique game with a very strong anime-style. There are tons of anime cutscenes and over 12 hours of voice overs, rivalling against Working Designs's Lunar series. You can expect the animations and voices to be of Lunar's quality and assure that the animations and voices are much better than that found in Xenogears's. Gameplay will take you at least 25 hours and above, which is reasonably quite long. Other than that, Thousand Arms feature the first dating simulation ever found in an RPG [Definitely better than Azure Dreams!] and a whole new combat system. Combat system are mainly one-on-one and characters can be grouped into frontline and backline. Furthermore, the opening and ending songs are sung by Ayumi Hamasaki, the famous J-pop artist. ======================================================================= 4)Do you think I should buy Thousand Arms? Of course, you can! But, I will advise you to complete games like Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy Anthology and Suikoden II first before playing it. Overall, Thousand Arms is a great game. I don't know about the rest but you won't regret it after buying Thousand Arms, at least this applies to me. ======================================================================= 5)What is the use of forging Rusty Weapons or Rags in a Sacred Altar? Basically, after forging these Rusty Weapons, you get to use them as Vintage Weapons. As for Rags, you will get School Girl, one of Nelsha's outfit. Also, take note that you can't forge any Rusty Weapons or Rags at any ordinary Smithy. ======================================================================= 6)How long will it take to forge a Rusty Weapon or Rags in Sacred Altar and how many such Rusty Weapons or Rags can you forge in a Sacred Altar? I am not sure exactly how long it will take but based on my estimation, it will take around 10 hours or slightly more. Each Sacred Altar can only forge one Rusty Weapons or Rags. ======================================================================= 7)Since the time taken to forge a Rusty Weapon or Rags is so long, do you think it's worthwhile doing it? It's really up to you whether you have the patience to wait or not. It's more worthwhile when you are early in the game. But, i strongly recommend you to forge Rags as it will give you Nelsha's outfit, School Girl, which is one of her special attack. [Refer to the forging and special section for more details.] As for the rest of Nelsha's outfits, you need to search for treasure chests. Note that her outfit, Disco Dancer is available in the beginning. ======================================================================= 8)I have missed some of Nelsha's outfits? Can you tell me where or how to find these outfits so that I can have a complete list of specials for Nelsha? Okay! The locations of the outfits have been listed in the special section. Search there yourself. Note that i only listed down the areas, not the specific locations of the outfits. If you want more information, please refer to Dan Simpson's walkthrough/faq for more details. Basically, if you have been careful enough, and opened every single treasure chest that you came across to, you should have gotten all the outfits for Nelsha by the time you got her, except for School Girl. ======================================================================= 9)I can't find a certain Rusty Weapons/Rags. Can you tell me where? The same as above question. Refer to forging section for more details for the locations of the Rusty Weapons. Also, be sure to refer to Dan Simpson 's walkthrough/ faq for more details. ======================================================================= 10)How do I decrease Intimacy level with a particular girl? I have forgotten to let my character learn a particular spell or special and I want to decrease the intimacy level with a particular girl so that I can learn it again. Give her items like Adult Novel or Umbrella. Or simply make the girl angry on a date by answering the wrong question. If not, play a mini-game with her and keep on losing a few times. ======================================================================= 11)Do you have a list of questions that will be asked when dating with a girl? I am afraid, no! I don't have it. But, you can refer to Dan Simpson 's faq/walkthrough. I don't intend to cover all these dating questions in my faq right from the start and all the questions listed in Dan Simpson 's faq/walkthrough were all his hard work. It's meaningless if i take any dating questions from him as this will be plagiarising his works since i do not have his permission and i do not wish to do that! ======================================================================= 12)Is there a way to determine the mood of the girls, as indicated by a heart? Hmm... ======================================================================= 13)I am stuck in a particular place? Can you help me? Hmm... Sorry, if you are asking for help on walkthrough, I suggest you refer to Dan Simpson 's faq/walkthrough. He has written an excellent faq. Be sure to view his faq in Courier New with a font size of 9 or you will have problems reading it. Of course, you can ask me too but i can't guarantee that i will still remember it since i have completed the game quite long ago and almost all the directions of how or where to go, i have already forgotten. Besides, my mailbox is always loaded with tons of mails everyday. I'll try and reply as many as i can so I seek your forgiveness if I cannot reply immediately. ======================================================================= 14)Who is Ayumi Hamasaki? Is she the one who sung 'Depend On You' and 'Two of Us'. She's a Japanese pop singer and the opening song, Depend on You and the ending song, Two of Us, in Thousand Arms were sung by her. Honestly, i don't know much about her. I am a Singaporean Chinese. ======================================================================= 15)Where can I download Depend On You MP3? Hmm... perhaps, I shouldn't mention anything about 'Depend On you' in my Thousand Arms reviews, which can be found at www.gamefaqs.com. Yeah, i did have the MP3 with me and the song is really nice! But, I didn't really download it from any site. My Japanese penpal, Kaze Yagami send the MP3 to me. I think the soundtrack is available. Just search some Japanese sites and you should be able to find the MP3. Hope that this helps you. ======================================================================= 16)Is Thousand Arms compatibile with PocketStation? Sorry, no! But, it is compatible with Analog Controller and supports vibration function. ======================================================================= 17)How much does a PocketStation cost? And, how or where do i import a PocketStation? Honestly, i don't know how or where you can import one. According to Kaze Yagami, a PocketStation is very rare and hard to find and is currently out of stock in Japan. In Singapore, it costs around Sing $70 but the actual price is around Sing $45. This is rather expensive. I don't have a PocketStation so i really don't know much about it. ======================================================================= 18)When is PocketStation released in the United States? Probably 2000 or later. Sony hasn't made any announcement yet. You just have to wait and see. ======================================================================= 19)Is PlayStation 2 backwardly compatible true? Will all PlayStation games be enhanced when it is played in PlayStation 2? Yes. PlayStation 2 will be backwardly compatible, meaning all PlayStation games can be played on PlayStation 2. However, Sony has announced that there won't be any enhancements. From what i have heard, PlayStation 2 ultises an emotion engine and it's indeed really very powerful. Talk about realistic facial expressions. The screenshots in Final Fantasy Movie are perfect example. Since PlayStation 2 is backwardly compatible, you can expect to use PlayStation Peripherals like dual shock controller, and even PocketStation too etc on PlayStation 2. That includes even the PocketStation, PDA. ======================================================================= 20)Can PlayStation play PlayStation 2 games? Of course, not! The PlayStation 2 games are more technologically advanced than the PlayStation games. Obviously, the PlayStation can't play the PlayStation 2 games. And, i guess the answer is pretty obvious. If PlayStation can play PlayStation 2 games, what for do we need a PlayStation 2 system? The PlayStation 2, on the other hand, can play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Does that make sense to you? Logical, right? ======================================================================= 21)I heard that there are some PlayStation games that PlayStation 2 can't play it. Is that true? And, what is the PSOne? I heard about it too. This may sound a rather bad news but don't forget that majority of the Japanese PlayStation games still work on the PlayStation 2. Sony has listed about 15 PlayStation games that aren't compatible with PlayStation 2. But, thanksfully, most of the games are old games that aren't really very good. This is more on techical problems. PlayStation 2 is the first console to be able to support backward compatibility. But i believe that in the future PlayStation 2 models, more PlayStation games will be able to be played on the PlayStation 2. The chip works like an emulator for the PlayStation. And, don't forget that there is no emulator yet that can emulate a console successfully, meaning with ALL games on that particular console being compatible and without suffering any slowdowns, common gitches and so on. Therefore, i don't think it's rather surprising. Anyway, Sony is currently testing out thousands of PlayStation games on the PlayStation 2 and we can expect a list of non-compatible PlayStation games on the PlayStation 2 to be released very soon. I sincerely hope that all the technical problems on the PlayStation 2 will be fixed soon and that all PlayStation games can run smoothly on the PlayStation. As for PSOne, I don't really know much. I suppose it is almost the same as your normal PlayStation, except that the size has been reduced to a CD-Player. Looks more cool in design. ======================================================================= 22)When is PlayStation 2 going to be released? PlayStation 2 has already arrived in Japan in 4th March 2000. As for the US release of PlayStation 2, you probably have to wait until late 3rd quarter of the year or early 4th quarter of the year. As for me, i think i am not buying a PlayStation 2 this year, which is 2000. Perhaps, next year, 2001 until the price drops furthur and a modified PlayStation 2, that can play both Japanese and US games, is released. [Hope that a PlayStation 2 that can play all PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, whether it is English or Japanese games, will be released soon.] You can find related information regarding PlayStation 2 in related sites like IGNPS2, www.videogames.com etc. ======================================================================= 23)Now that PlayStation 2 has arrived in Japan, what's your view about it? Do you think that PlayStation 2 can beat Sega Dreamcast and be able to compete with the upcoming Nintendo's Dolphin? And, what do you think about Microsoft's X-Box? Basically, i think the system is awesome. I heard that within two days, more than a million PlayStation 2 has been sold in Japan. For the exact figures, i am not pretty sure. I heard that there was a long queue for people who was purchasing a PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 release is indeed a big phenomenon. I heard that import of PlayStation 2 in Japan is now illegal. Well, not really sure if that's true! So, will PlayStation 2 exceeds Sega Dreamcast in terms of sales? I personally believe that this is possible. While Sega is well known for sports and arcade games, Sega Dreamcast lacks RPG genre. As you know, the most popular game genre in Japan is RPG. Furthermore, Working Design will not be producing games for Sega Dreamcast. What does that mean! No lunar games for the Dreamcast. I expect Working Design to continue the lunar series in PlayStation 2, thus furthur expand the PlayStation 2 RPG saga. However, i can't deny the fact that Sega Dreamcast has RPG games like Phantasy Stars etc. However, don't forget about Final Fantasy and Draqon Quest. One Final Fantasy game alone can sell more than ten Sega Dreamcast games or perhaps even more. And, according to Sega, it seems like sales of Sega Dreamcast has started to decline in Japan. Perhaps, it's because that everyone is saving money to buy a PlayStation 2. [Did anyone mention about Square Millennium Show???] As for online gaming, i don't really care much. Of course, the ability to play online games with your friends is cool [Of course, money too.] I personally think that online support isn't that important when it comes to RPG. Of course, i may be wrong. That's just personal opinion. It just makes me wonder how RPGs like Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XI are going to provide online support to compete with Sega Dreamcast. Perhaps, just download some datas, i suppose. In my opinion, online support appeals more to outside Japan like US. As for the PlayStation 2 launch games, i think they are incredible. Street Fighter Ex 3, a new Ridge Racer from Namco, Gran Turismo 2000 and so on... Overall, i still can't comment anything as i do not have a PlayStation 2 yet. Keep a look out at Tekken Tag Tournament for the PlayStation 2. I think it will beat Sega Dream- cast's Soul Calibur. And, i suppose Tekken 4 will be on the PlayStation 2. Will Namco make games for Sony PlayStation 2 or Sega Dreamcast? I don't think that Namco will make many games for Sega Dreamcast like Tekken 4 even though Namco's Soul Calibur is on the Dreamcast. That's because no other system can handle Soul Calibur perfectly, other than Sega Dreamcast in 1999, right? Get what i am trying to say? As for Nintendo's Dolphin, I can't comment anything. But, we can be sure that the Nintendo's Dolphin will be on par with the Play- Station 2 in terms of specifications. When Bill Gates announced that Microsoft is making a console system called X-Box, it sent shockwaves to everyone. Hardware manufacturer companies like Nintendo, Sony and Sega, whom have dominated the console market for years are definitely going to be affected by it. MicroSoft may be an expert when it comes to all PC-related stuff. But on how to get as many third-party developers to work on the games for X-Box, MicroSoft does need to learn from these masters like Nintendo and Sony. MicroSoft reveals that the X-Box is twice as powerful as the PlayStation 2 and clearly enough, this poses a threat to the promising future of PlayStation 2. Why? If games like Metal Gear Solid get released in both X-Box and PlayStation 2, the X-Box version of Metal Gear Solid will most likely to be better than PlayStation 2. If more games play and look better in X-Box, the PlayStation 2 will suffer. Given both consoles with the same games to choose, which one will you choose? Definitely, the one which is more powerful. A console needs to have many exclusive games in order to make it a success. PlayStation has many exclusive games like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken etc while Nintendo 64 has exclusive games made by Rare, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon and manages to survive in the competition. Still, Sony needs Square more than any other third-party developers. If Square is gone, there will be no Final Fantasties and PlayStation 2 is really hard to be a success as Sony doesn't have many third-party games to keep the PlayStation 2 survive. Remember that games like Final Fantasy sold millions worldwide. The total sales of five ordinary games can't even match up to a sale of just one Final Fantasy game. Square is the triumph card of Sony's future in the console market. I don't know. Nintendo hasn't made any official announcement about Dolphin. But, you can expect it to be a great system, just like PlayStation 2 with many advanced chips. I personally believe that the next Nintendo system will be another name, definitely not Dolphin, which i think it sounds awesome. Dolphin is perhaps just a codename. The new Nintendo system will definitely be on par with PlayStation 2, if not perhaps better. This time, i expect Nintendo's new system to be CD/DVD-based, instead of sticking to the old cartridge format. [Refer to above questions for more details.] Dolphin will definitely be released either in 2001 or even later. ======================================================================= 25)I heard that there is a program which allows you to view PlayStation CGs in your PC. Is it true? The URL is http://www.phoenix.net/~feldon/psxvideo.html Indeed, you can. Go to the above URL to download the programs and read the explanations there to understand how to use it. CGs or FMVs are created in .Str files and what the program does is to read these .Str files. Both PSXVideo and PSXPlay allows you to view any PlayStation CGs that are in .Str format on your PC. PSXVideo allows you to take screenshots. However, you must bear in mind that you will need a CDFind file to extract .Str files into your hard drive. And, note that .Str files very huge and it's all about hundreds of megabytes. ======================================================================= 26)What is an emulator or a rom? You can try and download a Nes or a SNES emulator, as well as the roms from the internet. A Nes/SNES emulator is a program which allows you to play Nes/SNES games on your PC. But, you need the rom to play the games. Rom is actually the game itself. There are quite a number of emulators available that are designed to play various console games such as ZSNES emulator to play SNES games, Bleem to play PS games and so on. Simply type in either emulator or rom in any search engine and you will have a whole list of sites which you can refer to. ======================================================================= 27)When did you start writing a faq? It was actually last year in November'1998. I was reading Henry Chan's faq on Tactics Orge and an idea suddenly struck me! At that time, i had just passed my 15th birthday. [Right now, i am 16.] I was playing the US version of Brave Fencer Musashi at that time. Somehow, there wasn't any strategy guides available for the US Brave Fencer Musashi so i decided to give it a try. Though it wasn't a school project, writing a faq is a pretty challenging task for me. My second faq was of course Final Fantasy VIII demo. Since i have the demo disc packed with Brave Fencer Musashi, i decided to start off with my second faq. My third faq will be Final Fantasy VIII, followed by Metal Gear Solid Integral. I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and i imported the Japanese version as well and decided to write a Basic Guide on it. However, there were many errors in my faq since the game was Japanese and special thanks to Kaze Yagami for clearing up my doubts. Between September'1999 and November'1999, i was having a major exam so i stopped writing faqs for several months until December'1999. Right now, i have written quite a few faqs on Brave Fencer Musashi, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy VIII Demo and Metal Gear Solid Integral, as well as several reviews on my favourite games at www.gamefaqs.com. Feel free to give me any comments! ======================================================================= 28)Which game do you think have taken the PlayStation technology to extreme limits? It's either Gran Turismo 2 or Metal Gear Solid. Gran Turismo 2's graphic is truly awesome, with a more advanced Al than its original. But, in terms of graphics, Al, ram memory, creativity, sound effects, music, voices, i will nominate Metal Gear Solid. It's truly an original game. It's not Resident Evil or Parasite Eve style. The setting of the game is quite similar to most Hollywood films and that's what i like about it. [Reminds me of Bond and Jackie Chan.] And then, the ability to view in first person mode, take photos, view in the scope mode are incredible. Metal Gear Solid took around two years to be completed, but sadly, the game can be completed in less than 7 hours. According to Hideo Kojima, he wanted to make a short game for Metal Gear Solid. Hideo Kojima probably felt that there were things left unfinished, therefore returned with the essential "director's cut" called Metal Gear Solid Integral. I suppose you will agree with me that Metal Gear Solid has a lot of potential. Just look at the wish list. It's interesting to see what Konami can do to Metal Gear as technology improves, especially with superconsoles looming over the horizon like PlayStation 2 and Dolphin. And, I can't forget about Square's latest hit, Vagrant Story- the game that surpasses even Metal Gear Solid in terms of realism, Al. The characters' motion are so well-captured and the cutscenes appear seamlessly. Square is heading the right direction if you want to talk about realism. Square seems determined in bridging the gaps between movie production and videogames fields and based on their recent games, they are very close to doing it. ======================================================================= 29)What do you think of the strategy guides written by other game magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro, PSM and so on? One word, "Sucks!" I seldom read strategy guides written by those game magazines for a few reasons. Of course, the official game guides written by Bradygames, and other publishers are another case. First of all, these strategy guides are not detailed enough and always missing a few important points. That's because they have to squeeze every single information into a limited space. Secondly, these strategy guides are often quite disorganised, specifically RPG games, but i am not referring to every single ones as that will make me look as if i am biased against them. The only good thing in their strategy guides are the numerous screenshots and that you don't need to waste time printing out strategy guide, unlike when referring to a faq. [but, don't forget that faqs are free of charge!!!] A picture tells a thousand words. This is a great advantage that these strategy guides have over faqs. Faq writers have to visual what is happening on in the game and then using his words to express, which is quite tough actually. However, the screenshots can be of a spoiler too! I am not saying that all the strategy guides written by all these game magazines are no good but... And talk about plagiarism... Oh, forget about that! ======================================================================= 30)I have read many reviews written by you. So, how do you write a review and when writing a review what should i look out for? Your personal feelings toward the game. Just write whatever you think about this game in your review. Don't worry about what others said in their review. Just provide enough evidences to support your reasonings. Of course, you can read a few other reviews on a particular game as some samples for you before you write one on it. But, please write an original review. It's best to minimise any grammatical or spelling error and write in clear, concise English, if possible. Gamefaqs really need a review editor. Basically, most of the reviews i have read in gamefaqs have some grammatical errors and spelling errors. The same applies to mine as well. If you have read any game magazines like EGM, Gamepros, you will notice some trends. First of all, the previews are usually longer than the reviews and most, if not all, reviews are pretty short and are usually less than 200 words. Secondly, the gameplay is almost always about the same score as the graphics. Why? Simple enough! Stiff competition! In order to remain competitive, a game magazine must release as many latest news, reviews, screenshots, previews on the latest game. Space and time are two important factors. Reviews must be short so as to allow more pages for other feature coverages. And, it's unfair if one game review is extremely long and another one is too short. And to release reviews on the latest games as soon as possible, the reviewers can only judge on the graphics and the few hours of time they have spent. Surely, you wouldn't want to read a review about two or three months after the game has come out, right? I understand that! Like what Dingo Jellybean said in his Final Fantasy Anthology faq, make the graphics the least important. I do understand why Dingo Jellybean said in his Final Fantasy Anthology that he hates reviews written by EGM, IGNPSX and so on BUT i do understand why game magazines must have short reviews. And, it doesn't mean that the reviewers at EGM aren't expert reviewers. The choice of words, vocabulary used are definitely better than most reviewers at gamefaqs. And, when you review a very old game like Final Fantasy Anthology or any other Nes, SNES system or even earlier games, before you give a score on the graphics, think whether which year the game was made. Why? Take Final Fantasy Anthology as an example. Final Fantasy V was made in 1992 and Final Fantasy VI was made in 1994. Both games are pretty old and obviously turn paler in comparison now than in those days. But do a serious analysis! Both Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI were made many years back. Were there any games that could come close to these games in terms of graphics in those days? If you think it this way, your review will be rather fair and unbiased. Just some words of advice. Whenever you review a RPG game, do not complain about the high enemy encounter rate. I hate fools saying this. This shows their ignorant and tells people that they have never played an RPG game before. Yeah, walk about three to five steps and you will encounter some random enemies... very fustrating like this.. makes the game bored... blah... blah... blah. This is totally a load of craps. If you think like this, then you are not fit to write a review and NOT EVEN FIT to play any RPG. I mean, what's wrong with high enemy encounter rate? Take a look at traditional games like Final Fantasy V, VI or even other game series like Breath of Fire, Lufia and so on. The enemy encounter rates are much higher than most modern games today like Final Fantasy VIII. People still play those traditional RPGs in the past and even TODAY. Final Fantasy Anthology is a perfect example. So, what's the big deal here? Does that mean that RPGs in the past can have high enemy encounter rate but not in modern games? Do you mark the game down just because of that? This is totally unbiased and unfair. So, talk about style of reviewing a game. Before that, make sure you have played at least five hours on a particular game or have completed it. Make some analysis on the game and be clear with what you are going to say. Now, back to the style of writing a review. I used to break the my reviews into several parts like graphics, music, sound, storyline, gameplay and so on. Later on, i found that writing in this style, it's quite hard to put down everything i want to say. [I am not sure about you.] If you read my latest reviews like Thousand Arms, Final Fantasy VIII and so on, i decided to break my reviews into paragraphs and then write the scores such as graphics, music, sound, gameplay and so on at the end of my review. Each paragraph will have one main idea, perhaps one will describe about the combat system, one about the storyline and so on. I strongly believe it's more effective this way, at least for me. I don't know about you because i am not you. Of course, if you are really interested in writing one review, you can consult some Master Reviewers like Dingo Jellybean or almost everyone on the top 20 reviewer contribution page. Don't get dishearted if your first review isn't ^. As you keep on writing game reviews, you will get better and better. Who knows? Maybe, someone working in a game magazine is interested in hiring you! Haha! Good luck, anyway! ======================================================================= 31)What is/are your opinion(s) of what humaetorcH said in his Thousand Arms? He gave Thousand Arms an overall score of 2 and criticised your Thousand Arms review. Hmm... what can i say? It's rather strange that he didn't mention the names of other reviewers who has also given Thousand Arms a rather high average score but only me alone. Anyway, never mind! Honestly, there are some parts that I do agree with him and some parts that I strongly disagree with. He was the only reviewer who gave Thousand Arms such a ridiculously low score of 2. And to defend my own opinion, I decided to rewrite my Thousand Arms review. The score still remains me as 8. And, if you read my Thousand Arms review, the portion towards the end are what i have just added. That includes the 8 points which I have given to defend my opinion. Feel free to read it! I wonder if he has read it yet! There is one important note which I want to stress to whoever is planning to write a RPG review. Don't be like humaetorcH! What's wrong with high enemy encounter rate? I am simply sick of such stupid reasonings given by those lazy gamers. It's rather common to see some people disagree with your reviews. I remembered Dingo Jellybean who gave Soul Calibur a ridiculously low score of 2 whereas all the rest of the reviewers gave it a 9 or 10. I can't comment anything about the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur since I do not own a Dreamcast. I am sure each reviewer has his own reasons for giving that score. The same goes to humaetorcH too. I am not saying that he is entirely wrong but... I just happen to disagree. Take Xenogears as another example. There are some reviewers who kept complaining about the poor control and long texts, and thus give Xenogears a very low score. On the other hand, for those who seriously enjoyed the storyline and the music [like me], you will find them giving Xenogears a very high score such as a 9 or 10. As for Final Fantasy VI, most give it a 10 but there are some who gave it a 7 as they complaint that Final Fantasy VI is too big and enemies are too many. I remembered I gave the first Suikoden a 6, and then, I got several mails from the fans of the first game who disagreed with me. I have to admit that i do enjoy the first Suikoden, as it plays more like a traditional RPG than today's modern games like Final Fantasy VIII. But, it ruins the novel. The game was not anything like a novel and did you know that Suikoden is a popular classic chinese novel. And, do you really need so many warriors, as huge as 108? Of all the reviews I have written so far, the most hardest to write is Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy series has changed tremendously over the last few years. People were complimenting and criticising Final Fantasy VIII. Just go to any message board in gamefaqs that has to do with RPGs, PlayStation, SNES etc and almost 75% will have something to do with Square and Final Fantasy series. Some preferred the way Final Fantasy is in the past and some welcome the change. And, my review nearly got influenced. I really like Perdurabo's [Review by Recovered] Final Fantasy VIII review. He is the only one so far who really convinced me that Final Fantasy VIII is really good. After reading his review, i did some serious thoughts. I ask myself. Why must there be a draw system? What happens if the draw system is being replaced by the traditional MP system? Will the Junction system still work as well? He gave it a 10 for Final Fantasy VIII. I didn't give that high. I have to admit Final Fantasy VIII is good, but there seems to be more bad points than the good points. So, i gave it a 7 instead but it doesn't mean that Final Fantasy VIII is no good. And, if you read an interview with Hironobu Sakaguchi, he mentions that the Final Fantasy series must change. Anyway, Thousand Arms is still a great game. The animation and voices are really excellent, and the game is really in-depth. As long as you have substantial reasons to back up your opinions, this is a good review. ======================================================================= 32)So, can you recommend me some good reviewers whom i should look up to as a guideline? Sure. I guess all the reviewers who manage to get into the top 20 reviewer contributions are good reviewers though i haven't gotten the time to read everyone's reviews. And, if you really want me to recommend some of the best reviewers in the top 20 reviewer contribution, they will be GlucoseJoe, Dingo Jellybean and SmCFadden. These reviewers are well known for writing in-depth and informative reviews. Other reviewers worth looking up for includes J-dog, Celestial Avenger, Sunshine and so on. As for me, what do you think? [Yeah, must be modest!] ======================================================================= 33)Since you have contributed a lot of faqs and reviews to gamefaqs, do you prefer writing a faq or a review? Obviously, it will be a review. Why? You do not really need to spend time researching on moves, secrets although you need to be familiar with the game. Besides, a review takes shorter time than writing a faq and you don't need to update that often unlike faqs. Lastly, your mailbox won't be jammed with countless mails, right? Hey, after writing a faq, you still need to respond to their questions, right? But, definitely not reviews, although you do get feedbacks too. Of course, i am not saying that i don't enjoy. In fact, i enjoy writing faqs and reviews because i want to contribute some of my ideas to the gaming community. ======================================================================= 34)Can i post any of your faqs or reviews in my website? Sure you can if you want to. But, please send me a e-mail, giving me your website URL, what the website is all about and so on. Of course, you must give me credits and promise that the contents will not be unaltered and you will check out www.gamefaqs.com every month to check for any new updates. But, this applies only to non-commercial webpage. As for any commerical webpages or any publisher working in a game magazine, he or she has to send me the e-mail first, asking for permission. And, before he or she can publish the informations, he or she must send me the final 'product' and if i am happy with it, i will agree to his or her request. Of course if anyone wants to convert my faq into HTML, he or she must show me the final 'product' first. I guess that's fair because you do not want all your hard work to be taken by someone else and let him or her gain the credits and not you. I hope you can understand that. Most importantly, be sure to check for new updates. It's no use if the faqs are posted but not updated. Note:If you don't receive my reply after a week, that means you have not obtained my permission. I am restricting the number of sites that are allowed to post my faqs. This is because I realise that there have been a number of sites who has either posted my faqs without my permission or have obtained my permission but fail to fulfill the conditions i set. An example is Gamesdomain who always fail to update the faq. ======================================================================= 35)You mention that if anyone wants to put a faq in his site, he must obtain your permission and give you credits, as well as promise you to update everytime and not EDIT any of the content. Why the heck do i see a similar Final Fantasy VIII Basic Guide in Kaze Yagami's website? His is a special case and i have given Kaze Yagami the right to edit anything he wishes. Kaze Yagami has helped me a lot in my Final Fantasy VIII Basic Guide. A lot of information or almost 80% of the information you see here, regarding whether it is about Crisis level, Boost, Compatibility and so on are kindly contributed by Kaze Yagami. You can consider him as half of the author here and that's why he has this special privilege. so, don't argue about it! ======================================================================= 36)Can you send me your updated faq? My most definite answer is no. If there's 1000 readers, do I always have to my updated faq to 1000 people. It will be VERY troublesome to me this way. Just go to www.gamefaqs.com and check if there's any updates in the 'What's New' section. Or, you can go and check out my contributor page at: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/1821.html You can find all the faqs I have written, including reviews at my contributor page. ======================================================================= 37)Can I ask you a question regarding games via ICQ? In the past, I used to answer questions via ICQ. But now, I don't. I find that it's quite annoying when I was replying e-mails but the ICQ messages keep popping up and I have to answer so many questions together. If you have any question, do not ask me through the ICQ. E-mail me instead if you have any question. One more thing. Do NOT add my ICQ number to your CONTACT list. Though I put my ICQ number at every faq, I did not expect everyone to add my ICQ number to his or her contact list. The thing is I already have a lot of contacts in my ICQ list. Those ICQ numbers which I added to my contact list, are those who are my CLASSMATES, and my PENPALS. Even if you add my ICQ number to your contact list, I won't bother to add your ICQ number to my contact list. First, I HARDLY know you well so it's unlikely that I will chat with you via ICQ. I might as well save the trouble of adding your ICQ number to my contact list. Secondly, if you have any question regarding games, you can e-mail me and ask me. ICQ will not be needed at all. I hope you can understand this. ======================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================= XII)GameShark Codes ======================================================================= Warning!!!:Do not rely too much on gameshark as it will spoil the fun of the game. Note that i won't be responsible if the codes listed below are wrong or do not work. Neither will i bear any responsibility if any of the codes here cause any damage to your PlayStation console.
